charcoal fertilizers??

i have heard that charcoal is great ferts for your plant .Is this just a myth but if true how should it be applied? and what stages of growth does it work with? seedlings, vegetative or flowering stages and how does it contribute to the plant??

answers are very much appreciated as i am a growing newbie and need as much feed back and info as possible.also the more info i have the more sucessesful i can be with future harvests
