I usually use litmus paper. 180 inches of it for $16. The one I use is for the range 5-9 pH. No calibration or batteries required. I use about an inch at a time.
In fact, my pH has tested good so consistently over the years that I usually only test at the beginning of a grow, just to make sure nothing has changed dramatically.

I used to use strips, but I was mixing like 8 five gallon buckets at a time and it was a total pain in the ass. They are reliable, but a pen is just quick and easy. Like I said, my last one made it 6 years almost to the day. I think I had to change the batteries once, maybe twice.
I checked the PH again today and it's still trucking. I'm going to say each day is 70 cents worth, and if it lasts a year then it paid itself off. I'm up to a buck forty.
So this pen was reading the 7.0 really well, but when I tried to calibrate it the 4.0 was reading 4.9. Then the calibration failed. The gamble did not pay off. I ordered a new one from Amazon that will be here Sunday.
