Clones - Refrigerator - Questions

I call this the "Fridge Cut Method" it's like tissue culture for poor disgusting people, lol jk!!

I learned this from Budderton, forum member here & elsewhere. I failed at it a bunch of times because I didn't "wake up" the cuts in a glass of water, forgot to give the stem a fresh cut edge, and not QC'ing each cut (quality control) as well as you did.

Nice job, man. 104 days in "stasis" that's impressive!

The first of the non refrigerated cuttings popped a little root out today.



The 1st refrigerated cuttings that popped a root went crazy today and shot out a bunch more.



The 2nd refrigerated clone that shot out a root continues to grow the single one out more and shot out a 2nd little guy.

You gotta leave a little water in the bottom of the baggies where the stems are. I've had success with 30 day old cuts using this method.

I wouldn't leave a wet cut in a bag for 100+ days. My opinion, the ones he mentioned got "fuzzy" probably did so because those cuts weren't as dry as the others.

Cool that it worked for you within 30 days but I personally wouldn't do it that way. Dry is the way to go IMO.

These were dry in the fridge for 104 days. Stored in individual ziploc bags. In the crisper drawer under a pack of precooked bacon. No water in baggies. No wet paper towels. When I took them out, they seriously looked and felt like the day I cut them. Some of the plant cuttings started growing some fuzz so I tossed them and never even opened the bags. All that to say, I disagree that there needs to be water in the baggies.

Ive had this cut in the butter drawer of the fridge for like 4 weeks. Aside from discoloration on the cut end & the plucked nodes, it looks "viable" to me.

Oh my bad I didn't see the 100 days part. That's insane if it actually works. I've always done the water method and checking back my records the most I've done was 6-7 weeks in the fridge. I gotta try this method next time.

I have tossed 5 of the fridge clones since I started this due to looking bad, peeking in the cube and seeing no activity, being too woody, etc... The 3 that are left have all rooted at this point. I have 5 of the non fridge clones left. I have tossed 2 of them for same reasons. The 3rd I picked up today and it had a root poking out, but it fell out of the cube and left the root behind. Oh well, that's why I started extras. Tomorrow I will be picking 2 fridge clones and 2 non fridge clones and putting them in coco. I want to see them grow out side by side and see if there is any difference along the grow between fridge and non fridge cuts. All cuttings were taken from the same 4 plants that were all clones from the same mother.

The main thing I have noticed so far is that the fridge cut roots do not seem to be quite as vigorous as the non fridge cuts. They do seem to come out fine, but they seem a little less peppy once they are out. That could be me, environment, etc... but they do appear a little different. I suspect that won't matter once they get settled into some coco with food coming their way.

I threw a few cuts in the fridge to test out this method. I don't have a vaccum sealer right now but I filled the sink with water and dipped the baggies in there up to the zipper to vaccum seal. It works just as good as the sealer. We'll see how they hold up compared to the old method.

Picked the 2 best of fridge and fresh clones and put them in pots with fresh coco and moved them into their new home. I'm going to start their own journal so this can stay as a discussion for fridge clones. Fridge clones are the back 2, fresh clones are the middle 2.

I will have to try this method. It would be nice to have a few stashed in the fridge for back up. I have 2 plants that I took 2 cuttings each. After 2 weeks, 1 of each were dead. I normally get 100% to root. After a few more days the other 2 were not looking good. No visible roots but I planted them anyway. Only a small amount of green remained but they pulled through. I am chopping the mothers on Friday and glad I managed to get a cutting of each to root. A few in the fridge may have been an option to have if needed.

I think I am seeing much more vigor out of the 2 fresh clones over the 2 fridge clones. The end product is what matters, but I am seeing a definite difference between the 2. Small sample size, so I will continue to keep an eye on them. All 4 have been topped one time.

I'm surprised at the results, much of what I read people seemed to see faster growth from the plants coming out of the fridge, claiming almost like a new found vigor from warming up.. keep us posted

In all fairness, my cloning setup isn't flawless. It definitely needs some help and improvements. My goal in the future is to dial in the clone game and get to keeping mothers for keeping genetics. As I get the clone stuff dialed in, I will definitely be trying this again and again. Hoping to get everything dialed and ultimately get repeatable and consistently results.

you are forgeting your lamp is probably in the middle.soo middle gets more lux than sides.amazing idea i didnt know you can keep them in a fridge almost a year :O i will be following your diary

Remember these little guys? This is them now. They have grown out and had a few hiccups along the way (my fault, lockout due to salt buildup) but they have grown out and are basically just waiting for chop at this point. Once the plants took off, I didn't really notice any difference in growth between the fresh and fridge cuts. Just by looking at them though, it looks like the 2 back plants are going to yield more, but that's just an uneducated guess as the branches are all pretty intertwined with each other. The plants have all but stalled out at this point and the hairs aren't turning color as they should be, but I feel that's due to the lockout issue previously mentioned. If they haven't made any more progress before Sunday, they will be coming down Sunday or Monday evening.

I took the 2 fridge clone Blueberry Cupcake plants out of the Koolatron this morning and put them in jars to see where they are sitting rh wise. I'm not at all upset about almost 3 zips per plant. Especially after the lockout situation.
