Coco and Pests?

I love cooking with coconut and coconut-scented products so the idea of growing in coco really appeals to me. The only offputting thing I have discovered when researching this product is the problem of pests. Some of the info I've read seems to suggest that the pests originate within the coco itself. i have an extreme girly fear of any kind of crawly bug and as I'm growing indoors right next to a vent that leads to the outside, the last thing I'd want to do is encourage them into my home. Could anyone offer any advice/experience on this subject and particularly whether coco is more prone to attracting pests vs soil? Also, does it have a coconut smell?

Many thanks in advance for replies.
