i think so..i think a cfl is called a t2 or something, but nothing like an hid. fluors have better quality light, though. unless you find an hid with a 80+ c.r.i.

haha no t 12 and t 8 then came out with. t 5
the bulbs 12's are biggest diameter bulb with less light/watt. the 5's are smallest with most amount of light/watt.
the lower number means you can run a smaller watt bulb to get same light as higher watt t 12.
size is a big factor t 12 are 1.5 inches in diameter where t 5 are 0.5 inches so you can fit more lights in a smaller space.
also most t5 do not have the annoying hum of a t12.
if i am wrong feel free to chime in.

i mean, t5s do put out on average 24 watts like cfls, but they put out more lumens at 2000.

i dont think cfls are considered t5s.

looks like a 32 watt t8 will only put out 1800 lumens.

so t8 are bigger, but less efficient like hiitsbob said.

Simply unbelievable bmeat. Your very special indeed.....fluorescent bulbs output is directly related by volume of gas and the watts used to excite it...pretty simple.

T-5s average 54 watts at 5000 lumens
T-8 average 34 watts at 2850 lumens.
Notice the T-5s are smaller in diameter than a T-8, hence a smaller volume of gas excited by a higher wattage. See if you can wrap your mind around that and undrstand it.

Bigger=a larger volume of gas excited by a lower wattage. I didnt figure you would be able to wrap your mind around it since its not that easy of a subject to google.
