Compost story

This is too good not to share for searchable history.

When my wife was a kid she was one of eight children. She lived in a row house in Philadelphia on poisoned land. There was a heavily toxic heavy metal chemical plant of some type on this land previously. This is not land to be growing anything on you are going to eat. They shouldn't even have lived there. Nobody should have lived there.

20 years later the guys in the moon suits showed up to test all the residents of the neighborhood and start cleaning large patches of land. They took huge amounts of exposed dirt and trucked it away to dispose of it.

But they didn't know any better in those days.

Her father wanted to grow a garden in the back. That meant breaking up all the concrete and getting to the dirt. He did that.

Then he told his kids that any food garbage in the kitchen goes into the separate bag to be composted. He didn't give any directions concerning plant versus animal waste. He didn't give any instructions other than take it out and bury it. Once a week or so the kids were supposed to go out back and dig a hole and dump the food garbage into the hole and then bury it. They did this for approximately 3 months.

When spring came he decided it was time to go out there and turn all the dirt in his yard.

At that point he found a plastic bag intact filled with garbage. And then another. And then another.

Of course at that point he's screaming at the kids and the response was that he was insane and one kid said he couldn't possibly do that, he was puking when he closed to that bag, he wasn't going to open it up and dump it. And he didn't say to do that anyway.
