Everytime I think I'm a week from harvest I get suprised with a bunch if new whte pistils. Is this normal? Do I cut anyway? I've been using a 60x scope except it's too powerful and I can't focus on the trichs without cuttin off the bud. My side colas don't have as many new white hairs but my big momma colas are going crazy with pistils. 8th week 5th day flowering supposed skunk #1(I'm really not sure if it is cuz I got it as a clone from one of CO clubs. Any help Is very appreciated and +rep for good responses!!!

forget the pistils....get a 30x so u can examine the trichs....i also shut off all lighting that can help misinterpret the color of the trichs...use a bright white light to observe trich color rather than one that is extreme high or low in the color spectrum.

how the hell do u take a pic under magnification?

What you do is cut off a piece of a sugar leaf from the bud and take it to where you have good light and can examine it. Then do that for several other locations on the plant because you can't go by just one. There will always be new pistils and new clear trichs. You just try to get an average, across the plant, of the percentage of amber trichs. I don't cut with less than 25%.

I was going to say the same thing.

to get a pic of trichs i first focus the magnifier. then put the cameras lens up to the magnifiers lens and take a picture.. takes about 10 tries to get two good ones.

Ok here is how its looking. Some buds have mostly cloudy and amber, other buds have mostly clear and cloudy and OTHER buds have mostly amber with some cloudy. See wht I mean by confusing lol. I know better than to go by pistils but my top cola is almost all white pistils even tho it's fat as hell. It's blowing my mind. I'll have pics in a few

as you probably know the amount of amber trichs in relation to cloudy is said to give different highs.

take an estimate of the whole plant. what percent amber trichs are there? if you want the couch lock high wait till most trichs are amber...if you want the energetic up high harvest when most trichs are cloudy. 50/50 is also an option this is said to give a combination of a head and body high.

go by the trichs that are finishing. 70-80% of the trichs that have globs or are a amber color. the hairs will turn color after you pull down not causing your bud to be any different

There are some who piece harvest, as in, as it ripens to desired range, remove that area bud.

Obviously the amber w/smoke is done. Personally, I'd grab the smoky w/amber now, too.
But I'm a lightweight.

you're saying the hairs will continue to recede(sp?) into the calyxs and change color after they've been detached from the plant?

yes most of the hairs will finish while drying/curing process. almost 100% of the time i pull down with some white hairs on it. make sure you dont have a 60 day strain which would explain why white hairs continue showing up

another suggestion is to cut down your more developed parts then leave that main cola for a few more days to gain some extra light

Of course the plant is going to change color when you kill it, but that's no substitution for ripening on the vine - so to speak.

Most the hairs will recede, but nothing is 100%. Some times the hairs will just turn color and wilt.

A pic would help, but if your buds are still pushing flowers, it's probably not even close.

30% amber trichs is close to ripe, and gives you a week in which to flush, and prepare for harvest.

Some say half cloudy and half clear is ripe, but those folks are harvesting too soon IMHO

i started flushing at first sign of amber...im not sure when most trichs will turn amber. still waiting and hoping i didnt begin flush too soon.
