I’ve seen a lot of back-and-forth about topping autoflower strains. I couldn’t really get anything definitive for it either way, so I decided to find out on my own.
It seems though that most everyone can agree LST is the way to go. I’ve done it, and my plants have responded pretty well to it. Don’t think I would ever run any plants without LST from here on out.
Another thing I was curious about was the topic of 3 gallon vs 5 gallon containers. I would prefer to keep running 3 gallons because I can fit more in my tent and use less medium, water and nutrients over time. But does that mean a lot less yield for me?
I had 3 Fast Buds GSC’s pop that I decided I would experiment with. I am running FFOF with FF trio nutrients. No feed until week 4 @ 25%. Growing under a 200w QB.
-Plant #1 @ Day 32 is in a 3 gallon container and LST’d
-Plant #2 @ Day 27 is in a 5 gallon container and LST’d
-Plant #3 @ Day 24 is in a 5 gallon, was topped at day 21 and LST’d
Not sure how anyone else counts days, but for me day one is when the seed pops out of the soil.
I’ve also defoliated very lightly (like a couple fan leaves every few days) from about day 20 for all of the plants. They are bushy and no tucking was gonna expose a few of the nodes below. I do not plan to defoliate in flower. Just removing the shade here and there.
Since I’ve staggered them a few days apart at a minimum, I can get an idea of this strains growth a week ahead of time between the oldest plant and youngest. I’ve never grown it before so I had no clue about it’s veg time and if I was topping it too close to flower. The oldest plant just started pre-flower, and since I topped at Day 21, I know from the oldest plant that I topped it with about 11-12 days to pre-flower. Will this be enough time? I have no fucking idea, but I want to find out.
My end goal here is to show the yield difference between the 3 and 5 gallon plants that were only LST’d, and the difference between the two 5 gallon plants where one of them was topped.
I’ll update every week! Hopefully someone will get some useful information out of this when I am done. This is the kind of info I hunt around for myself, so I am glad to be able to create it for others.
