Cool little setup crazy. I would really reccomend gettin that ph meter as soon as you can. Ive been using one like this for over a year with no problemshttp://cgi.ebay.com/Milwaukee-PH600-Digital-pH-Meter-Tester-Pocket-Pen-600-/270485335396?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3efa2ead64. cheap and it works. Yu can get some ph down and up at ace hardware or other stores that sell pond chemicals if you dont have a grow shop near u. U will use more ph down than up
thanks dude, i just bought it lol. i already got some ph up and down and a test kit but the electric one beats doing the drops in a tube.

peace

DAY 11

Plant Stage: vegLight Cycle: 18/6
Lights: 1 125w cfl
Medium: Rockwool & hydroton

Ferts: Flora Nova grow, 250ppm.
Strain: Bagseed and tarragon, type of seasoning.

Hey everyone,

so just a quick update and a question or two, since i should be working but i'm still at home slacking. sometimes outside sales has its perks lol. Today is day 11. lights turn on around 5:30 pm and shut off around 10 am. I am starting to doubt my ph meter. I calibrated it when i opened the package with the buffer solution it came with. I ph'd my res to 6.5 and checked later and it said 7.3 I tested the meter inthe buffer solution that is supposed to be at 7. it read 7.4 so i think i might bit the bullet and buy a halfway decent one. I have attached a few pics. has anyone dealt with this meter before?? thoughts?

Next question- is she stretching to much? and if anyone has a good ph meter link that would be sweet.

now for a few pics.

comments/suggestions?

peace riu

Nice PH meter you got there :p
They say that PH might change after you add nutrients and let the water relax a bit. I do not think is your PH meter's fault
Agree with SickSadLittleWorld 6.5 is too high. Try to keep it close to 6 but no more than 6.0
5.6 - 5.9 is what most people do.

The baby seems to be stretching a bit yes. But its not lacking light, as its leaves are not pointing upwards.
What worries me is the double colour it has...
Make sure you put 50% of the normal nutrient portion.

ALSO - baby seems to be droopy and a bit wilt to me. This can mean:
  • Hot Growroom
  • Lack of oxygen in the roots (has it reached the water yet?)
  • too wet rockwool and environment.

Try to figure out which of above could be. Unfortunately I am a n00b myself and I can not tell what's wrong straight ahead

A pH of 6.5 is too high for hydro. Try to aim for 5.7 and don't let it get over 6.0 for best results.
hey sick,

seems like whenever i check it its back up to around 7 even after i have added the ph down drops. what can i do to help stabilize this? i have the test drops and the tube to compare my ph meter to. i also just calibrated my meter again. it was .4 high....... any thoughts?

thanks dude

thanks for the comment dude,

the temps are a bit high, 82. once the tub is lowered temps will fall. the res is kinda blocking an intake but not completely. the roots have made it into the water. there is alot of em. i am a noob to hydro. which im thinking after this i may stick with soil.

What are you using for pH control? What kind of water are you using?

I'll bet those pH drops are the problem. I have heard of growers encountering problems using pH control meant for aquariums/pools/spas. Try some pH up/down made for growing.

word i'll get some soon. how much do they run per bottle usually? and do you have a ph meter or do you use the test tube or strips?

The whole kit runs $15 but the bottles are around $7 for the small ones and $11 for the bigger ones. A small bottle of down is really all you need for a grow of your size.

I use a cheap Hanna pH meter I got off ebay. It works just fine as long as I calibrate it often. You are shooting for a range, so accuracy isn't super important.

Hey ct. My tapwater is very good, comes out ph7 and 42ppm. When I add floranova nutes the ph drops and I need mucho ph up to sort it out. Not sure why you would need ph down, might be worth checking the ph of your water before you add anything.

The ph will fluctuate a lot in the rez. When you water at say ph6, if the food is acidic like I think it is then the water ph will rise every time the plant takes up food because it removes some of that acidity. The plant also dumps. It isn't possible to eat without shitting and that also affects water ph and is why you should change out the rez now and then.
Your pen is prolly not too bad it's just these factors that are making such a difference to the readings. Just try to use rez topups bring it back in line as often as you can.

thanks v,

i went to my local grow shop today and told him what the deal was. hw said ph drops for fish tanks are not ideal, hence why it kept going to 7 ph. i got some ph up and down today. gunna mess with it when my dad heads out for the night. is leaves drooping/twisting a ph imbalance sign?

peace bro

Not that I know of. Usually it locks out specific nutes. Do you check the temp of your rez at all?

i know to check it, just haven't done it yet. lights come on at night while the house ac is running so it shouldn't be to high. i switched to 12/12 2 days ago. i really dont care about yield much really as i may have to pull it.... but we'll see lol. whats a good res temp to shoot for?

I kept mine at room temps, 65-70. I'm wondering if that fan is on when the lights are off and cooling it a bit too much maybe, idk for sure, it was all a bit complicated for me mate. I went back to soil.
Try porting the air away from hitting the rez directly for starters. Maybe just a sheet of card to point the airflow up and around.

DAY 14

Plant Stage: flower
Light Cycle: 12/12Lights: 1 125w cfl
Medium: Rockwool & hydroton

Ferts: Flora Nova grow, 500ppm.
Strain: Bagseed and tarragon, type of seasoning.

what up everyone,

just a lil update. its day 14. i switched to flowering. yes i know the plant is not mature. this is an experiment so i have no goals for this grow. ill get serious in a few months so be ready lol. i bought some real ph up and down from a grow shop today. got all that fixed for good. nothing really else happening. i know i have a daylight bulb and that isnt good for flowering, again i dont care lol. lights are coming on at 8pm and turning off at 8 am. temps are lower because of this, more near 78 all night without the heat shield in. thats all for now. comments or suggestions?

Hey Crazytrain, man I got that same pc case. I tried to grow using dwc 2 times but jacked it up both times, so I went to soil. I will be subscribing to your thread for sure. I have not given up growing using DWC. Your baby is looking good to me, I certainly did not make it as far. I read that you should freeze a couple of bottles water and put one in your water to keep the temps down. GOOD LUCK
