Well the title says it. I just didn't have anyone to talk to so I figured what the hell I would post it.

Today was a nice day so I figured I would clean out my fish tank. I need to leave the front door open for the hose, I have a 80 gallon built in the wall with... well I Had six full grown African Cichlids in it.

With an underground filter the water circulates through the gravel and the bacteria build up in the gravel cleans the water. I have been doing this for years, more then I care to admit.

Well over time this shit gets to be too much and you need to clean it. Not very often like once a year or two. The way you do it is with this clear 2 inch around tube that attached to the end of a hose. You create a siphon and stick the tube in the gravel, as it sucks water out it takes the dirt and drops the gravel back into the tank right.

Well as you do this you lose water and need to fill it back up again. I usually stop when the tank is half full and fill it back up. Well that's what I did but I forgot to turn the heater back on and I froze them. FUCK. I know better then that. They were real nice too. After several years they finally stopped killing and eating each other. My favorite was an albino I have had for 5 years or more. She was a good six inches long. Perfect condition.

When I saw them at the bottom of the tank and upside down I felt the water and knew what happened. I ran and got a 5 gallon bucket and added warm water and tossed them in it, They are in there now but I don't think its going to work. No movement at all.

When I think about how anal I am about my water I grow with then I do this...

OK well that helped. Im still pissed at myself though. I always pay close attention to detail. Hell I was not even stoned. GRRR.

Time for a fatty.

Aww... sorry to hear it. :( Maybe it's time to move on and get some new fish? Or perhaps take a few months off and have an empty tank. Shit happens man, just try and keep a smile on your face.

Yea, I probably will go a few months without anything in it. Maybe I will go salt water and make a reef/plant setup. I seem to be able to keep plants alive. If the dam thing was not built into the wall I would take it down and store it.

Thanks again.

You took the fish out of really cold water and put them directly into warm water? Damn dude, hate to say it but that is probably what killed them. They can't take a nature shock like that. I got about 60 baby Convict cichlids if you want to come get them, though.

Thanks for the info but after over 35 years of raising fish I think I can tell when they are dead. The reason I put them in warm water (like 70d) is because once I had a jack Dempsey this happened to he was bent though. Anyway I took him out of the tank straightened him out and placed him on a towel and warmed him with my hands. He started moving again and recovered.

No it wasn't caused by the warm water but it could have been.
Thanks for the offer of the convicts but I only use those for fillers or when I have an aggressive fish that's picking on a fish I don't want him to.

I ran a fresh water for YEARS, had three huge gold fish in a little 5 gal tank ... They started to get ammonia poisoning almost every week because I simply couldn't keep up with how much waste they put out. I upgraded to a 35 gal tank (note these were my wife's fish.) They lived in the 35 gal for almost 3 more years and only needed water changes about every 5 months, just had to replace that which evaporated.

Well they developed ich and all died in order of 3 days after the first signs showed up.

I had put 2 bala sharks in the 5 gal tank and moved them to the cleaned and re-setup 35 gal tank. They got to be 10 inches long a piece, they were HUGE!! Instead of trying to move them we sold them back to the pet store.

Then I started a salt tank. Killed everything twice. Have moved again since and not setup a new tank because it's so much work to get one started.

Sorry for the loss of your fish, been there done that, and am hoping that MJ is less temperamental.
