dangers of over-potting?

Hello all;
I see everybody starting off in smaller pots, and then moving up to larger pots as the plant grows.
Is there any danger in skipping this whole process and just putting them into larger pots in the beginning?

I think that's the equivalent of planting them in the ground honestly. More room to grow, cap'n.

the roots will go straight to the bottom instead of filling out... someone made a diagram in paint to explain what happens if u use a big pot as apposed to starting small and gradually getting bigger.

I pulled up my biggest plant yesterday in a pretty big pot and WOW those roots were huge!!
