I say use whatever works. There are pros and cons for sure, but you're going to get good bud with modern LED or HID.

From what I've seen, newer grow ops are almost using exclusively LED. They're commercial growers operating in a small margin, usually in states where electricity is expensive. They also typically use LED as supplement lighting to diffused sunlight.

I converted from old mag MH'es to homemade LED and think my payback is 3- 4 yrs. Heat became a problem so had no choice. Don't think homemade saved me money but it was fun learning. Old mags made great bud but led seems same quality. I tried running a MH in addition to for the spectrum but didn't seem to help me. As far as weight produced I couldn't say because an oz lasts me forever so I want smaller plants with nice super buds of course.

no-one has tried to tell me that LED's are better for growing quality plants than HID's.

I acknowledge that LED's have come a long way since then....and maybe someday will actually match HID's .......but we're not there yet.
Ok, LED's are better for growing quality plants under some circumstances. Yes the technology is there for LED's to match HID's. It all just depends on your circumstances as both have their pluses and minuses. The main thing is that there is no need to defend HID's at all. They are a tried and true technology that does not need defending. Decades of use have shown that beyond any doubt. There is also no need to defend LED's as there are countless grows out there showing they will do their job perfectly beyond any doubt. You have 2 different technologies that will both accomplish the goals of a grower, pick what works best for your setup and grow your plants.

I've used both. HID on a small scale, and LED's on a large scale. I honestly can't tell the difference, other than less maintenance, and heat issues with HID. Of course, the quality of LED you choose is gonna be a big factor. Blurps are not quality LED. You need something like HLG's, Timber, etc. to get good quality buds. I can run 18 HLG's , a 3 ton mini split, fans, dehuyes, etc for about $450 a month. I can't imagine the heat and electrical would cost if I was running that room with HID's. But, to each thier own.. some people up North need the heat from HID, but it does come at a cost.

LED's are constantly getting better and better. Kinda like iPhones or computers, you gotta upgrade every now and then, but the downside is that LED's last so damn long, you gotta wait years to upgrade if you really got the itch to do so. I'd really like to get my hands on the new DimLux.. looks interesting. Programmable spectrum that has a LCD display showing the light spectrum... pretty cool. Don't even know if they're available just yet, but they look like they're gonna be hella expensive.

The tech difference between HID and LED is really a moot point. The true distinction comes in the ballast. Both HID and LED can be significantly overdriven with diy modifications. Further with the proper ballast set up the power consumption on both is negligible . So realistically it is all about the color spectrum of the lights....whether HID or LED provide the best spectrum for growth is up to you.
Wait till the LCD lights hit mainstream.....those things are majorly bad ass. Perfectly tunable color spectrum and can be run at extremely high voltages putting out mass lumens from tiny size. Cell phone size light is more than enough for 10x10 grow.
