Defund Police

We should listen to this guy:

DAVID BROWN: It's still true. You know, when a third of our prison population suffer from mental health issues. And basically the prisons aren't meant to be mental health providers. And that translates to cops having to deal with people who are mentally ill. Who- We don't have the training for that. And we just kind of by default take on that task.

I try to say things to cops and to citizens like this. Policing is the people business. It's not the enforcement business. And - and if you take away people from this formula, you lose the very nature of what policing is supposed to be about. We're supposed to be protecting people.

He makes a great point. Over the decades, more and more funding went to policing while mental health services, public education, and even animal control (re: cops chasing down llamas) were cut. He's right. Police are used in many capacities for which they have little training. For all of that money, we have a system that no longer serves and protects. It's become an institution that demands more from us while delivering the opposite of public safety.

So, let's listen to Officer Brown. Divert funds from police and fund social services so that we can have mental health professionals deal with mental health issues. Defund police so that drug treatment programs are available to addicts. Defund police and fund programs for at-risk youth.

I'm not going to use Trump's stupid line -- "what have you got to lose?", I'd rather we use reason, understanding, empathy and experience to guide us. We've put hundreds of thousands of additional cops on the streets but don't have the money to fix a city's lead-contaminated pipes. Fixing those pipes will pay off in lower crime rates within a very short time.

Also, end the war on drugs. Completely defund THAT.

So, let's listen to Office Brown and defund police so that the money can go into programs where it will actually reduce crime. He says they don't have the training for those services and from what I've seen the past few weekends, they don't have much training to be officers of the peace either.

Lisa Bender, "Responding to home invasions by police, is you know, white privilege....put yourself into the position of people whom by calling the police already make the situation worse...."

Looks like Minneapolis is serious about this.

Minneapolis City Council Pledges to Disband Police Department

Minneapolis is Not the First City to Disband Its Police Department
Camden broke the union then doubled the size of the sheriffs office, rehired most of the disbanded police force and re unionized in one year, dont think its a great example.

Our governor Kate Brown just strengthened unions and their collective bargaining rights about six months ago, with HB2016 [familiar with that @Fogdog ?] With language that makes it seem hard to even suggest disbanding the union by a public official, elected or paid, without incurring an unfair Labor Practice violation, whoopsie!

New Unfair Labor Practices
Finally, HB 2016 makes it an unfair labor practice for a public employer to (1) “[a]ttempt to influence an employee to resign from or decline” union membership; or (2) “[e]ncourage an employee to revoke authorization” for dues deduction.

Not sure why the Democratic bill and a show of support for the racial discrimination that has been systemic in our legal system is being trolled by you, a true champion of the people.

Now you want to see someone bending a knee to a foreign dictator here you go:
I like how Nancy Pelosi calls Trump obese and tears up his speech, then votes to increase his military budget and domestic spying programs. My favorite part is how liberals applaud the charade and never actually get change in policy

Hi buddy. Saaaaay, I am still waiting for a few of your most incendiary anti-Trump posts.

I can see why you are having a very hard time finding them as you seem to devote most of your spleen to criticizing his opposition for what you perceive as a lack of purity.

Yeah she should have just not signed the budget and let Trump shut down the government during the holidays again so millions of people don't have a paycheck during them.

Your Left-troll is stale.

But then the "Progressives" would have reacted by ushering in a new order of anarcho/socialism. I mean, they didn't make it out to vote for Bernie but they somehow represent the majority, right? They must be well rested after all that not voting.

Good luck without the police. I guess we can all just carry guns and police ourselves. Gun stores are gonna get rich. Sounds like we're going backwards not forwards.
Yes, it's expected to see hysterical exaggerations coming from white conservative Boomers and their ilk.

It's too much to ask you to READ what the proposals are. The proposal is to make cops more effective by removing responsibilities from them that they are not trained or able to fulfill and fund departments that are able to handle them. We will put out a picture book so that you can find out what the plan is.

Just take the cops guns away. Just like in a ton of other countries around the world. The police need to fear the people. Not the other way around.

What did Bernie accomplish last year? As a senator, that is, his volunteer work as a social activist.

Umm kept at least one less vote for Republicans. Even a placeholding, integrity-less independent has more integrity?

Is this good enough?

Several council members, like Jeremiah Ellison, have been outspoken in their support to disband the police department.

“We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department. And when we’re done, we’re not simply gonna glue it back together. We are going to dramatically rethink how we approach public safety and emergency response. It’s really past due,” Ellison tweeted on June 4.
