Thats about the size of my grow box (2x2x4). i have 4 24" fluorescent grow tubes placed right above 4 plants in 3 gal pots. 4 3gal pots fit just about perfect in mine, altho you could have 9 of this size in yours unless you go with smaller pots which is fine. i have a small fan keeping fresh air moving in. I think you'll find that the small space will be ideal for maintaining a consistent temp, at least it is for me because i live in a cold region. good luck and happy growing:peace:

you can definitely get a grow going in a space that size. the trick is not to get to big of a light maybe a 150-250w i have a 150 in the same size space and it does good.

oiiyyyvehh.. man ... just like justsaymint said, 4 feet high is really way too short to have a succesful grow.. and in such a small enclosed space, heat and ventilation is going to be a huge concern, so HID lights really are out of the question unless you are going to have a pro exhaust system (95CFM blower in and out)... small space requires you go with small cool lights and only like one or two plants.. I think this small of a space would be a good candidate for some LED lights.. they are very cool and you can put as many as the roof of the box will allow.. any grow medium will prob work and a fan is a must. go with a short indica strain, during veg top the hell outta the plants and it should work out.. good luck!
PS.. watch the temps and air flow, that will be a big concern for such a small space

Four feet should be plenty of room..and especially if you found it to be 5 1/2 you will be fine. Unless you're wanting to invest some cash and really get a decent amount out of this, that size will be perfect for you. Just switch the cycles over earlier..around 15-20 days if things are going well (they will probably be almost half a foot tall). If you use cfls make sure you read up in the cfl section and have a good idea of how many you need going into this grow. If you don't have enough it will start off slow and take much longer. good luck.

Also, if you take the LED recommendation those tend to be MUCH more expensive than cfls. So, like I said, read up in the cfl section and then in other sections to figure out what you want to do

T-5HO fluorescents are the most efficient light for a grow with a 4' ceiling.

Not just one on top, get the strip lights and add some to the walls hung vertically. If it is 5 1/2', you could use a 400w on top + side lighting.

Or, SOG with a 2" 8 bulb T5HO. Keep them SHORT and put the lights on an adjustable hanger. Keep the bulbs about 2" from the tops of the plants. Maintain good airflow.

600w would be great for the sq footage, but effective use of flourescents will compensate for your lack of headroom.

You need quite a bit of airspace between the bulb and the canopy, even with an air cooled hood. You can keep the tubes nice and close.

What you will never attain with floros, that you can with a 1000w, is canopy penetration. If your plants are thick and bushy, no light gets to the inside, so you'll get some shitty stuff growing in there.

If you went the 400w route with side lights, I believe that one big Supercropped plant would do very well in there, filling the space almost completely.
I think that multiple plants would not fair as well, considering a good portion of each plant would be well shaded in the canopy.

Good Luck

my grow box is 3'6" and i run a 150W HPS that isn't even in a cool tube!!
I only have a 40cfm bathroom fan for exhaust !Its possible and four feet is plenty for a Light Stress Training or a Sea of Green

believe my friend... but i dont think anybody here will actually DESIGN you a growbox buddy if your that lazy you should really consider even growing in the first place

Your best bet is to start reading through grow journals. Look at the setups and then read through to the problems you may encounter.

The #1 problem with growing in a box is heat. If you cannot ventilate properly your grow will fail. T5HO's will range from about $35 for a single fixture to about $500 for large high end ones(on the mainland that is). They put out a lot more light in a better spectrum for the plants and less heat than cfls.

My best suggestion is to get the 2', 4 bulb cfl with both red and blue bulbs. Follow that DWC DYI and run with a SOG. Keep the light close, 1-2" away and a fan blowing at an angle upwards towards the light to keep some of the heat off of the plants.

Strain selection is key. You want a mostly indica variety. If you can, use clones and once they reach 6 inches high, put them into 12/12. If you get a heavy producer such as Nirvana B-52 (a hardy, stocky bush plant with high yeild), You could probably see 3/4 - 1oz per plant. No topping, No LST.

Trim the lowest branches off right about when you go 12/12. This is called "lollypopping". The canopy will be dense and require great ventilation. Humidity needs to stay low - 50% RH or lower to prevent bud rot or mold.
You can put up to 4 plants/sq ft with a HID, but if you're going with t-5s, try about 2/sq ft. to allow the light to get into the canopy a little bit.

1 400 watt

1 real plant or as many as you can fit in there...

the 400 watt will be perfect
plus then you can make a bigger grow room when your ready.

you could use 150watt easily enough ;)

but i reckon 400 all the way. then you know youll be able to strive for what you want.
do whatever you want and do a bigger grow once you understand it a bit better

the 400 watt wil make it possible to grow a nice big plant too and reach more fowlage on the plant/s

sorry i just reckon theres no point unless you go 400 watt or more

unless if your experimenting or doin a small SOG

in a small grow box if worried bout heat just buy a cool mist humidifier that should be able to take care of it i got one in my box to keep the heat down and it works just fine, my box is 1'8"(deep)x3'6"(wide)x5'(tall) and i got a 400w in there
