Detroit about to go Bankrupt

Some of the pensions in Wayne Co are famously outrageous. Some were able to base it off their last year of employment, while overtime was given on a seniority preference. This allowed some to work as much as possible for a year and then earn more in retirement than their average salary. This is obviously an unsustainable model. The problem with the human element is not all city/county workers were able to get this sweetheart deal and living off 1000-1400 a month. These people with smaller pensions (the majority) were told for 30 years that if you work for the city x amount of years, you will draw a check and planned their retirement accordingly. It sucks to be them right now.

On a side note, the Detroit Institute of Arts has more than enough assets to cover any pension liability but the property is protected under the MI constitution. They have a handful of works with estimated worth over 100M each. When there is talk of selling off DIA assets to cover debt, people there are acting like they are talking about destroying the art, not selling it. It's going to be interesting to see what happens. Van Gogh must Stay is the local rallying cry. I lived there 25 years and never once visited the museum.
