Diatomaceous earth as a soil conditioner

Hey everybody I have a question. I did search but crap there are a ton of threads with DE in them and they are all about gnat control or should I say, the lack of gnat control Lol....

Have any of you used DE as a soil conditioner? I am not talking about the stuff that is powder form and cakes when wet. I'm talking about the stuff used as cat litter or to dry the floor in my garage. Napa auto sells it in 25 quart bags (roughly 5 gallons) for $8.00

It's very absorbent so it will hold moisture and it does not float like perlite does. I imagine it could be pre-soaked in an ACCT or something prior to mixing it into the soil.

So back to the question.... Has or does anyone use this form of DE in their soil? Did you like it or dis-like it for any particular reason? I purchased two bags today and will mix it into my cooking soil very soon if there are no claims to negative effects. If there are negative effects I will use it on my floor.
