Disappointed in the size of my root ball

I get a little bit of run off every time I water but it's not much. I just leave it in the trays to get sucked back up by the medium.
All the salts in the runoff are being drawn back into the cloth pots if you leave them sitting in the runoff. That's very bad. As suggested raise the pots above where the runoff is draining to.

I'm not using fertilizer other than a very mild top dressing of organic nutrients to make sure there's no deficiencies. I'm more concerned with nutrients washing out of my soil through runoff than salt buildup.

We're not talking much runoff here, and it doesn't sit in the tray for very long. Maybe 5-10 minutes before it's all back in the medium. This seems to be a pretty common practice in organic grows.
