So I found an HPS light fixture in the dumpster near my work...I gutted it and took the ballast, socket, and bulb home...I have NO idea what I'm doing, but this is the way it was already hooked up...Anyone?

I dunno, I was wary to begin with about pulling lights out of a dumpster...but there were two, they changed them out at my job, I'm gonna ask the guy who did it tomorrow if they still work, but the bulb looks practically brand new...250w Lucalox(GE)

There should be a set of input and output wires... Black White and Green. Green or Green/Yellow is always ground. try to find a manufacturer or a model/part/serial# on the fixture itself and google it, you'll prob be able to come up with a wiring diagram or user manual or something like that online. I honestly didnt even watch the video you posted (sry, new beavis and butthead are on!!!!) but depending on what kind of wiring you have, look up "wiring diagrams" or "wiring colors" at wikipedia or your website of choice to get some info. I once got two 150w Hps ballasts off craigslist for $30, had no wires coming out, just a big metal box w a socket and bulb... I had to gut it also and splice on an extention cord, black to black white to white and green green :) then I had to figure out how to hang these giant things and get them both under a homemade reflector. They came from a Budweiser brewery parking lot :-)

I dunno, I'll probably end up scrapping it, but I woulda kicked myself if I just let a free WORKING hps setup get thrown away...

There should be a cap and an ignitor with it. If they aren't there it's not worth messing with. Looks like a 70W hps ballast that I have lying around.

Ballast looks cooked. Looks like you just need to hook the black and white to a plug. Can't remember right now which on the plug is hot and which is neutral, but i am sure a quick google search will figure it out.

HID ballasts use high voltages. Several hundred volts to run the lamp and a 3-4 kV pulse to start the arc. If you miswire it there is the possibility of even higher voltages. This is not a situation where you guess.

Usually on these ballasts there is a white common lead on both sides of the transformer. Black is power to the lamp, typically through the capacitor. I cant see enough to be sure but it looks like you have a multitap transformer which means that on the input side there are connections for 120,240, 408 volts etc. On all the ballasts that I have wired up the 120v input has been orange with the voltage written on the wire in small letters. There should also be an X3 tap on the transformer for the ignitor.

The circuit also needs an ignitor and a cap. The 70W HPS ballast that I have has all these components on a small circuit board. If these are not present, then the ballast is worthless since it costs as almost much to buy these separately as does the complete kit and the cap has to be matched to the ballast.

Wiring up a ballast kit that came New In the Box is pretty straightforward if you can do basic household wiring and take the time to be careful. I would not mess around with something like this that has lethal high voltage unless I was familiar with the circuit and had some understanding of it.
