DIY nutrient |TEST thread| Coco DTW

Over the course of a few weeks whilst my supply of CX nutrients dwindled away I was waiting on the courier to deliver some packages to my brother in law on my behalf.

I am using Fatman's coco (grow) recipe I lifted from a lengthy discussion on another site, recipe below for those who are interested.

For me it is PH stable at 6.0 when mixed and diluted in reservoir, day 2 and no PH changes noted.

Feeding twice daily at 450-500ppm (0.9-1 EC).

I did my usual morning feed on day 1 of the new feeding regime (I used CX up until yesterday) and by the time I got home from delivering my teenager to school things had perked up quite a bit, I did not see this using the CX range.

Although there is a little bit of leaf protesting going on I would figure this is normal having just made a major change in diet but I may dial back the ppm just a little but will see how today (day 2) progresses.

Cost: roughly $200, with somewhere in the vicinity of 80,000 litres worth of the final dilute product so I probably wont run out for quite some time.

how did you source some of those in part B?

like the ammonium molybdate and the zinc sulfate? can you get those in smallish amounts?

Yea but I had to look around in the internet to find them but I managed to source 0.5kg portions of all the trace elements online, the only thing I can't find but isn't in the recipe is potassium silicate though I could get it from amazon or ebay if I really wanted.

How long have you been using it?
 
I mix my own but haven't made a stock solution yet. I use the same ratios as athena with slightly less sulfur so I can add some potassium silicate rather than potassium sulfate. The potassium silicate keeps the ph stable and silica is good for strong branches.

For the veg formula I use pek acid rather than mono-potassium phosphate so the ph comes out to 6. If I used MKP it would come out too high.

Veg Formula per gallon: 6 ph don't remember ppm I think it's around 750

500mg potassium silicate
675mg pek acid
585mg potassium sulfate
100mg chelated micros by plant prod
1.345gr magnesium sulfate
630mg potassium nitrate
2.325gr calcium nitrate

Flower formula per gallon: 930ppm & 5.9 ph

200mg potassium silicate
1.175g monopotassium phosphate
1.425g potassium sulfate
115mg chelated micros by plant prod
1.545g magnesium sulfate
2.715g calcium nitrate

If my plants are eating less than the ppms I'm mixing I just water it down with ro water after mixing but I always use these ratios because the ph comes out perfect without needing ph up or down.

It's not hard to mix your own fertilizer...
These overpriced fertilizers are the same ingredients coming from the same factories....
None of it is rocket science, require a PhD or anything more than a basic understanding of plant nutrition and chemistry....
The formulas are all pretty similar...

Just start with a micronutrient blend and build on top of that....

If you start with a good micronutrient all you need is calcium nitrate and MKP. I've used this for years. Cheap as hell.

You quite literally just put extra topping on a store bought pizza.

I am happy with these results so far, a noticeable improvement over CX in just a few days.

Update: Growth seemed to accelerate for a few days before slowing down and paling near the tips, meanwhile the 2 touchy pheno's far left showed small signs of N toxicity by the end of that week. I'm not an expert but it seemed that using fatman's recipe there was something missing and from what I read that there may not have been enough magnesium (front centre showed what I think was slight Mg deficiency) or perhaps not in the correct ratio and I also needed to find a way to lower N levels without going too low on the calcium side of things (not being sure if what was slowing things down was CA, Mg or an improper ratio) At the same time I noticed major changes (400ppm+) between feedings (3x a day) where before I was getting 100-200 ppm drop consistently.

I made some calcium acetate from oyster shells and white vinegar just so I could uncouple the associated N with calcium nitrate whilst I reworked the Ca Mg and N ratio's in hydro buddy (first I had to learn to use it ha!) and I can get around 200ppm's to my tap water from 50ml/100 litres of the calcium acetate solution and 20grams of mag sulphate + I now am feeding a bit less N. My ph isn't stable like it was before using the calcium acetate, it now rises gradually but growth has resumed and my ppm runoff is back to the normal 100-200ppm fall.

I read over the last week that calcium acetate reacts and bonds with P though I haven't seen any precipitate so I'm really not sure what happens in that regards whilst in solution so I increased the P levels a couple of ppm, just in case.

For anyone wondering you cant concentrate mag sulfate in the same solution with calcium acetate but you can make it an addition to diluted stock solution and it wont precipitate. Plus, making it takes a few days, you have to wait until there are no more bubbles rising. I ordered some magnesium nitrate so in future I can make a concentrated calmag supplement and at the same time uncouple the sulfur from magnesium sulfate :bigjoint:

The recipe below makes 100 litres but I diluted it down to 1.2 as E.C was way too high at 1.6 (including +200ppm acetate solution/magnesium sulfate)

I played around with some calcium/magnesium additives but couldn't get things correctly in proportion however I'm having no issues getting what I feel are better results for much cheaper now at least without the snake oil if that makes sense.1666554703863.png

Yea I figured that's what you meant, after the fact. Way cheaper than bottled, and more customizable.
