Do you keep animals besides "pets?"

Working animals, livestock, chickens, ducks, pigeons, pigs....what kind of animals do you keep, and why?

I raised some chickens one time, first for the eggs. Then when I had to move, I learned how to process a chicken.

We has 8 chickens at the bottom of the garden they were all different breeds and layed everyday but we became over run with mice they were in the house, garage and hundreds in the pen so we gave the chickens to a big farm estate near where we live they we're able to roam free their. We sold the pen and run, but my grandson was a bit upset at their departure so we told him the chickens had gone on holiday, he still asks if the chickens are having a good time and if they've got their sun cream with them bless him. ;-)

I usually keep around 2 angus cows, 3-5 hogs, and about 15 laying hens and I do this for food. But with the drought last year I have reduced my stock to 0 hogs and one cow, it just isn't worth the feed cost. A farm down the road from me that breeds alot of cattle actually fed their cows candy at one point last year because it was cheaper then sweet feed.

got an old barn cat that wont let anyone pet it, but loves the little bit of food we leave out...i watched her eat 3 mice in like two minutes when i was cleaning stuff out- she just waited behind me like she knew they were gonna run, i figured that gets her rent thru the spring..i got some worms on order, gonna do the compost bit again too....

Pigs, goats, sheep, cows, chickens and a deer is what I currently have.

I'm getting ducks, geese, turkeys and possibly a pony this Spring.

Had a bunch of horses but got rid of those last year.

Glad to see all the responses! It seemed an appropriate question to ask. After all, the one thing we do all have in common is our affinity for spending months growing a plant so we can chop it down, cure it, and smoke it! It's a lot like raising a chicken to pluck and turn into stew. As for the "meat rabbits" comment, that just seems like a lot of work and processing for so little meat. But hey, if that's your thing...do it the best you can!
