Does anyone happen to be a snake owner?

I'm interested in getting a snake of my own, and I've never had one, but I really like kingsnakes based on looks and from what I've read about it. I'd just like to know if anyone here has a snake and if so, do you smoke with it nearby? I also have some other questions for you! Like what kind of snake do you have? What kind of habitat do you have setup for it? What do you feed it?:hump:

Make sure your enclosure is 110% escape proof. Snakes are escape artists. They will find a way out if there is one. I currently keep a small collection of north american milk snakes, 5 ball pythons, and a few rat snakes. I have had 3 escapes in 15+ years of keeping. One was because of my own stupidity (cage left unlatched), the other two were the same snake from the same cage.....i still don't know how she got out.

As far as recommendations, i would suggest a ball python. They don't get very large (about 4 feet long), they are extremely docile, and they are attractive snakes.

What kind of king snake are you looking at? Some are kind of "jumpy".

I set up most of my snakes on aspen or pine bedding, stay away from cedar....its toxic to snakes...provide some sort of heat gradient (one end of the cage about 10* cooler than the other) and a heavy water dish (snakes are strong and can easily tip a dish over).

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any questions.

great info+rep

but yeah i agree, i have a ball python and they are fairly easy to take care of. i have him in a 20 gallon cage on aspen, with a heating pad. i feed him a small adult mouse once every 1-2 weeks. i dont really get him high athough i do smoke near him.

I kept snakes for years. I would recommend something that doesn't get too big, like a cornsnake, kingsnake or ball python. I had 2 boa constrictors and a rainbow boa.

The rainbow boa looked cool when sunlight hit it's skin, you could see rainbows colors reflect on it. Oh, and I had one escape too but found it.
