Does diatomaceous earth (silica) work against mites?

Hi All,
I am in the process of battling broad mites. I'd rather have spider mites, easier to kill. I have heard a few websites talk about diatomaceous earth being effective against mites. I wanted to hear from the crowd to see if anyone has any experience using it, and is it effective against the adults and eggs? I have some ultra fine water soluble powder silica that I feed to my plants from time to time and I wanted to know if I could use that?
Thanks all!
Yes, I know that quarentining is the best way to go with plants, but I'm taking over a garden from someone else, who just didn't give a fuck and i'm just nursing it back to health.
