Does lateral root growth promote lateral branch growth?

It has been said that marijuana roots will grow only so far vertically but tend to grow horizontally farther. I recently started vegging in a shallow but wide bucket to give more room for this lateral growth, and the plants branches seem to be growing more horizontally also, much more squat and bushy. This is a new strain for me so I'm not sure if it is just the way this strain tends to grow.

Can anyone shed light on this question with actual scientific knowledge, or at least real experience.

Personally, I have had my plants grow better with deeper pots. I've grown in various sizes of fabric pots outdoors and the low profile ones didn't seem to do as well for me. I think it has to due with being outdoors, the heat of the sun causes more evaporation and higher root temps on the lower profile pots compared to the deeper ones.

It won't make a difference, it's just the strain. Healthy roots make for a healthy plant but thats about as far as it goes.
