Dr.J's 2K14 Adventure: The Age of Induction

Heyyyyyy yoooouuuuuuu guyyyyyyyyyys!

this will be the thread I update with my grow. I used to do a journal with long detailed information and if that becomes desirable to those of you who decide to ride along with me, let me know and I'll put it up here. I keep a handwritten journal for myself on every grow so I will be able, most likely, to create a journal from scratch with all details necessary/desired.

So, without further ado, the specifications of this grow are as follows:

-Area - 4'x2'x6' tent
-Ventilation - 540 cfm tjernlund extraction fan, 6" ducting, passive intake
-Lighting - 2 fluorogrow 4' 4bulb evergreen HO T5 with fulham racehorse ballast, rigged out with zoomed flora suns (≈ 432w) <<----supplemental side light
- Indagro Pro 420 PAR Induction lamp (420w) <<---Primary light

-Medium - modified supersoil recipe based in large part on Subcool's, coot, and 3LB
-Container - starting in red party cups with base mix, perlite, and a ffof:perlite 50/50 blend. The top 1/4" of the cups are FFOF so as to provide a nice dark home for my soaked ceeds. From party cups they will go into 2L bottles (perhaps 3gal buckets), then 5 gallon smart pots will be their final homes. the smart pots will be bottom filled with SS and then topped with my base mix.
-Water - just good ole dechlorinated tap. I usually set up a 15 gallon reservoir with air stones bubbling so i've always got fresh, dechlorinated, well oxygenated water available.
-Techniques - topping the uncle ben way; basic horticulture in other words. I may try some different things with the light schedule--walking down more gradually rather than doing my usual 18/6 > 24 hrs of darkness > 12/12; I will clone the three tops, and take 3 more SSD clones when the time is right as well.
-Genetics - Devil's Harvest Strawberry Sour Diesel (Strawberry Cough x Sour Diesel), Kerala x Skunk 1, Royal Queen Power Flower
let me know if i left anything out!

Seeds soaked and in their party cups under a 4' 4bulb quantum badboy with 2 florasuns and 2 6500k spectralux. temps are a little low (68-70F) and humidity is as well (50%). the girls are right next to my chili starts, lettuces, and my special lady's sweet peas and heliotropes.

Hope I have some friends along for the ride this time around!
Be easy,
:peace: :leaf: :peace:

a) ffof-perlite not ffof(smileyface)erlite
b) can't edit
c) I'll post pics of my setup and everything once things start coming to life; otherwise its kinda boring, no?

just picked up some 1 gallon air pots so i'll be going from party cups, to 1 gal airpots to 5 gal smart pots.

Thanks for popping in Jcon, i surely will keep tabs on this one. and keep up the good work with the blue dream! haven't been updating since i figure we've all seen seedlings in party cups--not much to look at yet. Made the transplant today to the 1 gal with about 2" of straight SS on bottom, about 4" of a mix of some ss and base (2:1ish ratio base:ss) and then base the rest of the way up. Power Flower is taking the cake with growth thus far but she's also the only one who hasn't been knocked over by my old lady--clumsy wench, knocked 'em over trying to get to her english thyme and lime basil :wall:. They (Kerala x skunk and the Strawberry Sour Diesel) seem to be doing fine. I would have liked to have waited another week for them to get a little more rootbound but decided to go ahead and get them under the IG and get the veg really going. Used some rooter's mycorhizzae on the rootball and in the spot they were transplanted to but the transplant went uncharacteristically poorly but they should all survive and pull through the shock.
think i should brew up some EWC+molasses AACT or something?

for those who hate walls of text--a) get used to it in here and (B) PICS NEXT POST!!!

I will not post til I see some pics...

oops I just posted...lol
haha thanks for chiming in hyroot!
Thanks for stopping by fresh, hopefully we can trade some knowledge and learn a few things together!

had a nice post all laid out and something happened in the submission process... :/ oh well

to fulfill that beloved RIU mantra,
Pics or it didnt happen:

IMG_1671 (1).jpg<<Strawberry Sour Diesel
IMG_1672 (1).jpg<<Power Flower
IMG_1673 (1).jpg<<Kerala x Skunk
IMG_1674 (1).jpg<<Side view of PF
IMG_1675 (1).jpg<<Side view of SSD
IMG_1676 (1).jpg<<Side view of KxS

I'm guessing up to 4 days to fully recover from transplant because they're living in slightly cooler than desirable temps and lower than desirable humidity: Temps 55-75, humidity 16%-40% (i'd like to get that in check).
Not much I can do about the temps since they're being majorly affected by environmental conditions so they're gonna have to just deal with it--I'll add a few days of veg to compensate
Be easy!

Looking good. I'm keeping my eye on this one.

How much does the IG weigh, roughly? I got similar tents from Fleabay, one had metal gussets and the other plastic. The plastic ones have failed in 1.5 years, from the weight of a 4 x 4' T5HO fixture. So I'm thinking about constructing a new space...have been considering trying Induction. It looks promising! Not sure how it compares to LED.

it's just about 15lbs; sorry to hear about your joint failures! I've never had a quality LED, so I can't really compare for myself, but the IG runs nice and cool, and the girls seem to love the rays
thanks for stopping in!

Nice setup mate! Your ladies are gonna love that 420, mine sure did. In the harvest stage right now and cannot wait to get things dried/cured so I can measure out how much my crop yielded.

great to hear mr. john! if you've got a thread drop a link, or if you want to show off some pics in here, feel free, you're more than welcome to!

Growth has been super slow due in large part to low temperatures. I've even seen a 39*F low  So i've been having to work fastidiously to try to manage things, and have been keeping temps above 57 as best I can, but such is life. I think i may just bite the bullet next week and insulate the whole garage. yep, i've just decided, that's what i'll be doing. I'll insulate the garage and then pack the tent in insulation as well (obviously porting the vents appropriately, etc.).
But, they're all at least 5 nodes so it's time to top for 4 colas and clone the tops. I'll throw some before-and-after pics up later!

The KxS had 6 going on 7 nodes, and the PF and SSD both had 5 going on 6 nodes, so I topped all of them at the 2nd to get four colas. KxS and PF are both heavier feeding and exhibiting some signs of hunger as can be seen in their lower foliage. I'm giving them a full week's growth so I'm going to top dress with EWC and water in with some kelp tea. I also gave a light foliar of aloe after the topping--i read somewhere it helps with temperature stress, so hopefully a regular regimen will help my girls battle through to the warmer weather.

It's also looking like it's about time to transplant to their final homes. I've never transplanted from an airpot so i'll be interested to see how this goes. I'm probably going to switch to all smart pots though; DankSwag's PHOGS system is pretty intriguing in that regard, check it out if you haven't gotten a chance to yet.

I'm cloning the tops and a couple side branches in a bubble cloner with an aloe juice solution in the reservoir. We'll see how I do with that. I'm a lot more comfortable with gels and soil cloning, though, so if this diy machine doesn't give me roots, i'll just go back to that methodology with reconstitute aloe gel.

Anyway, enough yaking, here's what everyone really wants:

IMG_1695 (1).jpg<<Strawberry Sour Diesel Before || SSD after>>IMG_1702 (1).jpg
IMG_1699 (1).jpg<<Power Flower Before|| PF After>>IMG_1701 (1).jpg

Any thoughts are always appreciated!
