Dutch police say they have discovered an illegal cannabis nursery hidden in a World War II bunker.

"Police on Friday (local time) discovered the illegal cannabis nursery in an old bunker after being tipped off by outdoor enthusiasts," police spokesman Cor Spruijt said.

A group was hiking near the North Sea at Katwijk, north of The Hague, when they discovered the hidden hothouse.

Police found 168 cannabis plants, most of them at least one metre high, as well as equipment and an electricity supply illegally tapped from a nearby water pumping station, Mr Spruijt said.

The plants were taken away and destroyed, he said.

Although cannabis is illegal in the Netherlands, in 1976 the country decriminalised possession of small amounts and it is widely available.

However, growing and selling any quantity over five grams is illegal, meaning the cultivation and sale of large amounts of cannabis is largely in the hands of organised crime.

The old bunker forms part of the so-called "Atlantikwall", constructed by the Nazis from 1942 to protect the North Sea and Atlantic coastlines from Allied invasion

I live in an area that was used as a training facility during WWII these under ground type bunkers are located on privately owned property now.I personally know of several unfortunately there aren't any on my property........the ones I've been in are like Quonset huts only they're underground and not wired for power with concrete floors and one entrance they generally have a vent on the ceiling that protrudes about 2 feet above the forest floor which is how I spot them other than that you could walk over one and not know.
