DWC - Big Reservoirs?

So I am thinking of going with a DWC system to try and grow a few large plants.

It seems there are 2 types of DWC systems out there: The single reservoir (rubbermaid) type with some holes cut in the top, and the multiple 5 gal buckets hooked up with lots of plumbing type.

I don't want to have to deal with multiple 5 gallon reservoirs or plumb them all together to recirculate and maintain level from a central reservoir, that just says LEAK to me.

I don't think you can grow a half dozen 4' tall plants in a single rubbermaid, and going to multiple rubbermaids looks a lot like the 5 gal bucket solution.

Has anyone made a DWC out of the Reservoirs used in the Ebb and Flow setups?

This 40 gallon one is 30x38x12 in size and has a porthole hatch for checking water, nutes etc. It seems i could easily cut 5 6" hole in the top and get 5 huge plants growing in it. Basically an Industrial Strength bubbleponics system is what I am thinking. http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/customkititems.asp?kc=HRAA040K&eq=

Yeah, it is not cheap, but it seems like it could be a good solution. the fact that it is only 12 inches high really appeals to me as well, that leaves me 5.5 feet to the top of my room, so probably 4.5 feet of grow space after rooom for the light.

Thoughts?

i don't know about this......although it will probably work i can already see some drawbacks.
1. once those plants start getting big in the close proximity you have them in, they will be fighting for light and start growing together
2. buying nutes for a 40 gal rez is gonna get expensive, especially if just for 5 plants
3. you say you have 5.5 feet to the top of the room, but how much room is your light gonna take up?

I've never done it but I'm thinking of something similar. If you used a the same setup you're talking about with a 32 gallon rubbermaid tub and put about 12-16 4' pots in there and grow it DWC. But my main problem is how to change the solution every weed, once the plants get large the lid is going to be heavy and impossible to take out of my closet every week. Anybody got any promising ideas?
