400 hps and five 20 watt mixed spectrum bulbs , do you think that the cfl's contribute or am i wasting electric.

I do think they contribute but would move them down so they are working under the canopy, now it might be that they are but in the pic it looks like they are even with canopy top?

thank for the advice, but sticking the cfl's under the canopy will start to burn the leaves as they turn to the light's i think. They get suprisingly hot. Might see about trimming some leave away so that it will fit, but would this stress the plant?

cant you just surround the lower part of the plant with the lights, but refrain from putting them within range of the leaves? then you'd avoid any heat stress/burns...

if you can't put them under the canopy scattered out(which is what you need to do), just put them where this was taken from so they get light from this side..but the cfls probably aren't the problem lol that hps in a cramped space like that definetly needs a fan

If you dont have a Veg chamber to hold clones then re purpose them for that.

its just the way the pic is taken the grow room is 4 x 4 and is on a thermostat, my problem is that i dont seem to be able to grow plants i seem to grow trees and that is with topping as well.

so your saying you want your plants to be smaller?

sounds like the strain for one or lights are too far away. How long are you in veg? You may want to look into more indica strains which are shorter by nature in first place. IF your growing sativas then you may not be able to veg as long as you have been as remember the growth spurt you will get as the plant goes into flower

Sativa strains stretch. Indica's stay shorter.

WW is a stabilized Hybrid.

My advice is make a veg chamber for clones and flower them at one foot.

I have a 400 HPS in a 4 x 4 space like you do.

I run indica that I flower at one foot and they get just over 2 feet.

Sativa is the taller one and I believe WW is a cross about 60/40 Sativa Indica I may have that backwards. My white widows only get about 2 1/2-3 feet under 1600w HPS, when plants are mature get the lights as close as you can and raise them as needed instead of letting the plants grow to the light

Well you dont need a whole nother room.

Just a small cardboard box with those CFL's, put a tiny fan in the side and you can keep clones.

Then you dont have to mess with males / seeds and you have a better turn around time.

I did have the light a lot closer to the tops but burnt a top or two, i probably have gone a little over kill and moved them too far away, any advice how close i can put a 400 hps?

I keep my 400 about 9-11 inches away from the tops.


Ive gone as close as 6 but the leafs start to overwork.

right the lights are closer, dropped the cfl's down to nearly on top of the buds (about 2inch) hps is about a foot

As close as your hand can stand to sit under the light comfortably. I am using a 400w in my grow room and its a bit less than 18 inches away right now probably about 15. I would think to get it a bit closer if I could in flower bet you close coverage area, thats where your cfl can make up for any areas not fully covered. maybe the cfl can get closer and leave the HID where it is.
