Hey, no expert here, on my second indoor w/LED's but have grown outdoor for many years and know my plants. Most of these LED manufacturers say around 18-24" but it's more about coverage and blend of the lights/bands reaching the plants than anything like burn etc. Depends on how much space you're trying to cover, as you get closer you could loose some coverage towards the outside range of coverage. Mine have 90/120 degree coverage and 12" seems to be the closest I can get them before loosing outside/edge canopy coverage. I've had them as close as 12" (they're at 12" right now and I'll be moving them up this weekend when I do some maintenance). On average I've kept them within 16-18" through veg. and the girls are happy (see pic at 11 weeks, just before I flipped them to flower). Never had any sort of burn issues. I figure if mine stretch beyond what I think they will I can tie them back a bit and maintain the 12-16" gap which seems to have worked well through my first and second grow with these LED's. You can see new/vigorous growth (lighter green) all over the plants in the pic and the lights are at about 14" above the canopy in the pic...

Start at the recommended(even though it sounds high) and then work it down(or up) based on plant response and coverage needs. You really don't want it more than 12"-15" at the absolute closest, so the 20" they said really it's not too far off. Good LED's, even average ones nowadays, don't need/want to be close, they are just as powerful as hps(didn't say it covers the same)... light is light and if it's too powerful it will harm plants. 18" is a good standard height in led's right now for this point in technology.

Vega, I know you are a CFL guy...look into the cree globes if you haven't already. 3x the output of cfl's with 1/3 the watts. I just tested the par of globes vs cfl last night and was super impressed.

im phasin the cfls out as I can afford too....nxt purchase will be the diamond series cree from advanced led...w that n this ds100 I should hve things covered...these plants have been under this ds100 for abt two weeks now...they started under cfls....they love it...the distance has gotta b close to spot on they've stacked well n all that...just figured I could play w it a little n see if they can stand bein a few.inches closer...
