fan in a box ?

I've read that you can run your duct fan in an insulated box in order to keep noise levels down. Does this work? Is it safe to do?don't the fans heat up at all? Anybody know, or currently do this.

Anyone? Sounds like it will work. Mabye if you use a fire retardant dynamat or something?? I don't have room in my box for the fan so I'm looking for ways to keep it quite.

cant see why it would not work. a duct fan (like this)is made to run in a heated duct for a furnace so the temps should not bother it. instead of a box, they make insulated ducting as well or you could wrap your duct to see if it lowers the noise.

it works just build a box, put some insulation in it and close it up. should work fine

Temperature isn't an issue with a fan box -- the fan is self-cooling anyway, so that isn't a problem. the box idea works great to cut down on noise, but you can pretty much get the same effect with insulation and tape. And get a fan speed controller. Odds are you can slow the fan just a bit and it'll still do it's job but a LOT more quietly!!!
