i was gonna say that the few times iv'e been up there, they do seem to be more meek than americans and respect their gov't way more than we do. i kinda remember speed cameras (as an example) all over the place. we sue the shit out of the local gov'ts to get them removed as unconstitutional. lol.
Up until the 1970's gun ownership rates were about the same in Canada and the USA, we adapted to changing social conditions and the results are apparent.

Can't be done. If you have the money and perseverance, you can get a gun. There are more guns than people in this country.
i think we're on the same page. make it so that people that are legally buying guns pass the background checks. but make those checks much stronger. that's all you can do.

but take this dude for example: (most made up stuff) 20 yr old with a perfect record bought a glock when he was 18. gets fired from his job. just put a down payment on a house last month. day before he finds out wife is cheating on him. 2 days ago finds out his dog has cancer. he loses his shit and shoots up the place. how do you stop that?

admit to owning guns. i think the real number is much higher personally.

you'd have to amend 2A first before you do anything.
You have national guards now and while the second is important, it was for the maintenance for a Militia, under the state's control and at it's command. You would be surprised at how little the second amendment has been adjudicated in the specific areas like I outlined above.

you'll have to fill me in: how did your gov't do that?
Mostly by progressive changes to the law, for instance personal protection is not a valid reason for ownership of a pistol and they are very restricted and registered. Long guns are another matter, but magazine capacity is limited to 5 rounds and you need an FAC to buy a gun or ammo.

About a year ago we had a mass murder in Nova Scotia where I live that murdered 22 people, he illegally acquired the guns from the states and conned people with FACs to get him ammo, they are charged with crimes too. Guy was dressed as a Mountie and drove around a rural area at night settling scores, murdering at random and burning down houses. You can't stop this shit completely but you can take measures to reduce the probability and make it more difficult.

sounds like you live in the wrong country. move down here and become a anti-2A lawyer. :)

you can't get rid of gun violence unless you get rid of guns.

we are on totally different trajectory here: applications for CCW (conceal carry: obviously a handgun) permits are astronomical. they weren't even a thing a decade ago.

There will be American lawyers who will use these kinds of arguments and others. The NRA fucked themselves, so did the GOP and gun laws have popular support. Someone needs to pass a law and someone needs to challenge it.

Is it an infringement on your 2nd amendment rights to have to wait for a background check before buying a handgun?

We don’t have constitutional protection for gun ownership here but I can easily purchase a handgun if I wanted to. I just won’t be able to pick it up this afternoon.

alot of people think it is. it's the whole me first, me now mentality.
i disagree: its not like a hammer from home depot where you need it today.

i think a week is acceptable. and i think people need to prove they can shoot it responsibly too.

Not suggesting you can be like Canada or want to be, just knock down the volume of firearms over decades by clever use of the law and pass a few while yer at it, so some yokels can challenge them. Keep guns out of the hands of assholes, the mentally ill are a threat several orders of magnitude below that! ;)

But you can't trigger the 2nd amendment crowd into voting if you actually pass legit legislation by making it a social/political issue about the 'libs' coming for your guns.

They need these non-issue issues (like all the evangelical click bait) to keep the delicate balance of voter suppression and gerrymandering for the Republicans to keep their political power.

Keep it secure and only take it to the range in the truck of your car, it goes on from there...

like i said, i think the actual ownership % is lower than reality. and the sheer numbers of guns here is way above the estimates.

Buck Rogers had guns in the 25th century. lmao.

Other than doing the minimum popular things, it's too dangerous to do anything big on guns in the current political situation. Though the democrats might not lose too many votes on it, the second amendment crowd almost exclusively is republican. Background checks, domestic terrorist watch and no fly list, domestic violence etc, the low hanging fruit.

I think that would make a difference. At least a good start.

To be clear, I’m not implying we have all the answers up here. There are better models for gun control to examine than Canada’s I’m sure.

You don't wanna do anything big on guns any time soon, don't inflame and excite the Trumper base, he's not on the ballot in 2022 and many may stay home unless stirred to action. Joe is POTUS and he is white as snow, these people operate on feelings and not logic, Joe will grow on them if given a chance and should have coattails in an off year.
