Ffof issues, thought process, diagnosis, remedy

Alright, so I have 3 barneys farm purple punch photos going. Started germ April 10th, can't remember exact date that they popped but all 3 of em got put in dirt at the same time. I'm about 38 days In id say.
I have a 4x4 box with a viparspectra 450w and a dimmable 600w (gunna return that and buy another 450w) in ffof and have been getting nothing but distilled water as I heard that ffof was good to go for a month or so.
The babies were in their second homes (1 gal) when I noticed the claw happening, I thought over watered em. Leaves were starting to get dark. But I thought purple punch, maybe it's just the strain. Then they started twisting and I was like ok, somethings up. So like any beginner grower, I took to the internet and discovered nitrogen toxicity. I ruled out over watering because they continued clawing even after the soil was dried out. So the internet said flush. So flush I did. 2 days later my babies were reaching for the light. Looking fabulous. 2 days after that, worse than ever. So I figured, maybe flush em again? But I was running low on prepped water so I did a light flush, but they didn't get better. They didn't get worse. But not better like last time. So I thought maybe they were root bound, during those 2 days they grew a lot. So I transplanted up into 7 gals where they are now. Continued clawing. I started getting frustrated so I looked here and found a thread about how ffof can also have crazy ph fluctuations. Again being a beginner, I didn't have proper equipment for ph ing? So distilled water and ffof cuz its PhD already right? So I go get a digital pen and soil prod. Low and behold the soil was like 8. Lucky me I live in a rural area, went to a local ag Co op and asked them to analyze to soil. They confirmed it was super alkaline and I told them this story and they told me how (I'm paraphrasing and could totally be fucking this up so forgive me) basically the nitro tox caused a build up of salts which in turn raised the ph of the soil(?) So to remedy they said 2.5 tblsp of lemon juice per gallon x 3 for every gallon of soil. I ended up doing it, and three days later the babies are looking better and the soil is in the 6-6.5 range

So buyer beware, this could happen to you. But if it does maybe this will help fix it.

And I'm sure more experienced guys will come and say you shoulda done this or that and I'll take that advice so please, lay it on me.

Hard to know where to begin here, but i will try my best.

Ffof is hot soil for babies, they will be fine when they get bigger.
Where are your salt buildups coming from, are you adding something?
Flushing is a useless thing in an organic soil.
Distilled water is not going to help you any. Try spring water or tap.

Lastly, try doing less. It is just a weed.
Good luck with your grow:peace:

check the ph of the water your using. If you need to check soil ph feed till runoff and take the runoff and test the ph in that. Don't flush out the nutrients. I've used ph tap water with ffof they grew just fine in veg.

Somebody fed you horse manure
You can't have salt buildup

Buy real PH down if you must but don't use lemon juice in soil

So the "do less" approach I used on my first grow with fantastic results. I just mixed some potting and gardening soil, random seeds and everything. So I figured it'd be even easier with better genetics and soil. I'm just tryna give em some love.

I didn't add anything at all. I once added big bloom at half recommendation and then I started seeing the nitro tox. So idk anything about salts or where they come from or how they form.

I have been reading about mixing tap and distilled to get like cal mag in there. And tbh all this distilled is getting pricey.

But, end story they're looking much better

I added some photos of them from the process20210504_185526.jpg20210504_185523.jpg20210506_055640.jpg20210507_061035.jpg20210507_061032.jpg20210511_060746.jpg20210511_060744.jpg20210516_054601.jpg

Soil is pretty forgiving. I use the same tap water indoors as i do my outdoor garden without any problems.
Distilled will need cal/mag supplementation at some point, and is overkill for anything other than a controlled hydro grow.
