Got this bit of info from an old head stoner (dont they just have the best advice?).

Take a regular incandescent light bulb and wrap it with aluminum foil, creating a "shelf" on the top of the bulb to place your weed on. Turn the buds every 5-10 minutes, and they should be ready to smoke in under an hour.

Im finishing up my first time doing this with a small amount, but have previously used the microwave method. This seems to be much more effective, but I will report back after smoking. I think its the gentle application of heat that makes the difference. The microwave, even on low settings just kills the taste.

stays relevant.
did your friend mention what watt rating for the bulb?

additionally, i grew a half ounce under a 150w incandescent, so i don't think they're useless. :)

I'm using a 40 watt. If you leave the buds too long, they will start to burn, so make sure you turn them often.

I just smoked what I quick dried. The taste was smooth, and I'm pretty high. So I am quite satisfied with this method over the microwave. :D

I do it with my buds. I tried several quick dry methods & came up with this. I sit a paper plate on top of my lamp shade. My lamp has a 75 watt bulb. Take a couple cut up buds & place on the plate. This takes me about 12 hours, but it smokes decent.
