Sen. John Warner, R-Va.

God surely does work in mysterious ways.
My soul had become so distressed at the continued presence of John Warner in the U.S. Senate that I had, in moments of weakness, asked God if He in all His wisdom wanted me to be the one to oppose him as a Republican in 2008. I knew no one else would dare do it.

I can only surmise now that the peace I got in response from those prayers was the answer I had hoped to hear: NO!

Much to my relief, Sen. John Warner, R-Va., has announced he will not seek re-election next year.

Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Perhaps clear-thinking Virginians will get some real representation in the U.S. Senate once again.

Warner is 80. He has been in the Senate for 29 years – 29 years too many.
Virginia is still a state capable of electing two top-notch U.S. senators. That was never going to happen as long as Warner hung on. Warner swept into office with Elizabeth Taylor on his arm in 1979 and has, quite candidly, been a reliable vote for the political and social and cultural establishment ever since.
Warner didn't serve the people. He served the elite. He is and was a spineless politician who really never believed in much of anything other than his own comfort and power base.

Just last week, Warner returned from a trip to Iraq and joined Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in calling for troop withdrawal by Christmas. Actually, let me correct myself. I'm not at all sure Clinton and Obama have ever gone that far in demanding troop withdrawals this year.

There isn't one aspect of the Republican Party platform that Warner would unequivocally support. He's a total squish – a RINO, or "Republican in name only."

With Warner finally leaving office, there is at least a chance for Virginia to elect one senator who supports the U.S. Constitution written by a Virginian. Despite its proximity to Washington, District of Criminals, Virginia can do better than it has in recent years. It can produce good leadership. It can produce officials who will be a credit to the nation. It can produce politicians who can set standards for the rest of the country.

But that could only happen in a post-Warner Virginia.
I am so happy to see this man go.

I am so relieved that I won't have to sacrifice to pry him loose.

I am so delighted that former Gov. Jim Gilmore has said he was ready to run if Warner decided to step aside.

It's time for a house-cleaning in Congress. It's time to cut down all the old dead wood. Wouldn't you like to see Teddy Kennedy finally ousted from the U.S. Senate? What will it take to get rid of people like Daniel Akaka and George Voinovich? How long must we endure people like Joe Biden and Robert Byrd.

If America doesn't get rid of the old klansman and the perpetrator of Chappaquiddick soon, I'm afraid this country will face judgment for its enabling of these criminals and perverts and charlatans.

Barbara Boxer, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, Larry Craig – for heaven's sake, it's not a Senate gallery, it's a rogues gallery!

Then there's Dick Durbin and Dianne Feinstein, Lindsay Graham and Chuck Hagel, Daniel Inouye and John Kerry.

It is a very sad commentary on this great country that we produce such poor leadership.
But I'm still rejoicing today in the good news that one more bites the dust – John Warner. Yes, Virginia, there is a God in heaven.
