First Grow, G13 Auto PE 400w Hydro

Hey guys,

First attempt at keeping a grow journal so feel free to give any comments / suggestions! I have a 400w mh going right now on my single plant, HPS bulb standing by. I am using my aerogarden base for this grow with the stock lights removed.

I am using the aerogarden liquid nutes.

Few questions:

1.) I don't have great ventalation in the room except for a square hole (2x2) that leads into the attic which I have left open so heat can rise out of the room so I'm worried about the plant getting too hot with that light, how close should it be?
2.) I can tell that the leaves are curling a little at the points of the fan leaves, anything to be concerned about?

After week 2

Near the end of week 3 (today)

looks nice, i'm subbed up.

question though, i've seen a few journals now where people have wrapped their pots in tin foil. I'm assuming this is for light reflection; I was wondering if it makes a noticeable difference and if you have any problems with hot spots? It's something I've only noticed recently, but i'm pretty new to this. thanks and best of luck!

The foil is to keep light off the hydroton (or whatever media) so it doesn't grow algae on collect salt stains from evaporating water.

I dunno much about the aerogarden thing you're using, but look pretty good for a first go, maybe a little small for 3weeks. But for the first few weeks its 90% root growth.

You want the leafs "moving" from air circulation, that will fix the curled edges.

Dont lose sleep thinking about temps. That plant looks very healthy and has had a fair amount of growth already. Nice work. Just for the record it kills me to see people going hydro on their first grow. But great job.

I just feel that hydro is an advanced technique and that soil is a much better way to learn to grow. It is just a bit easier IMO and I believe that you should learn to grow and then learn to grow in nute soloution. Just my opinion.

Do you have a fan blowing on it? home depot or Lowe's has cheep thermometer that shows humidity and records the highs for the day. well worth the five bucks. Do not want to do anything that could hurt or slow down the auto.I just finished pineapple express auto . subed to see what you pull off ur's

I am also wondering if I should try uncle ben's pruning method to get some main colas? What does everything think? I don't want to over complicate my first grow.

Thanks

Any MJ plants usually take off with faster growth rate beyond the seedling stage after the first 3-4 weeks from seed germination. Depending on the size of your confined grow space and surrounding temp in the house or wherever a 400 watt could create heat problems at some point. Try to keep temps around 75-85 deg. when the light is on and around 60-65 at night. Dry ambient air is usually the cause of fan leaves curling under. Generally as a rule grows perform better when you create a confined jungle of plant material instead of just a few stalks spread out in a larger room. My relatively small 'box' has a wall-to-wall canopy of fan leaves with no branches or leaves below where it stays cool and shaded, and the plants love it like crazy. After awhile you'll know how to get the PH right without the meter. The tap water where I live is alkaline and balances almost perfectly with the acidity of the hydro Gro and Bloom formulas I use without any need to adjust the PH further. The G13 is an excellent choice. Make sure you wait till they're done and not pick 'em early like most first timers do. They'll fool you and look done when there's still a week or two to go. The trichomes or crystal resin glands covering the buds should turn from clear or white to slightly amber in color, which only happens in the last few days. It's well worth the wait. Best of luck!

Almost forgot. Keep the 400 watt about 12-14 inches above the tops of the plant(s) for best results. You want as much light as possible getting to that baby without getting too close and burn the tip of the growing shoot. Keep in mind that the sun is many times brighter than even a 1000 watt MH or HPS. And the idea is to replicate the sun as much as possible.

Update:

Noticed some bad nute burn happening. Took the ph (just got the meter today) and it was 7.0. I added a little bit of vinegar and got it right at 5.2, dumped the old water and put new water in its place. Few more pics:

So after looking I don't think what I have is nute burn, can anyone tell me what the spots on the leaves are?

Thanks

Ok, switched to Fox Farms nutes so we'll see how that goes. I wondering if the aerogarden nutes suck (my guess is yes). Pics to come early in the week hopefully after my baby is well again.

Update:

Looks liks she may have started flowering so I switched to the HPS bulb. Topped off her water and shes looking good! (I think).

Can anyone confirm from these pics that she is flowering? Also included pics of the whole room and yes I know I could get more plants in there!
