First Grow Journal Nirvana Raspberry Cough + freebies

Okay it looks like my seeds should start sprouting tomorrow I took a look inside one of the rapid rooters and the tap root had good growth and the hull was starting to push towards to surface so I figured I can officially start my grow journal.

Here's my set-up:

Room- 2ft x 3ft x ~2.5ft max plant height
Lighting- 600w HPS in an air cooled hood attached to a 400CFM inline fan both ran 12/12 from seed due to security reasons, energy usage and limited height
Medium- 100% perlite 2 gallon Hempy buckets, seeds are started in rapid rooters
Nutrients- Lucas Formula with Maxibloom from start to finish 7ml per gallon once the plants get their first true sets of leaves, right now they are on 3.5ml feedings every other day with regular tap water on off days, I have a PH balance/testing kit, but will experiment with whether I feel I need it for my Hempys
Plants- 4 Raspberry Cough from Nirvana, 1 DinaChem from DinaFem and 1 White Widow from DinaFem, I also have one bagseed in a solo cup Hempy, but it is for experimental purposes and will likely be killed before harvest

I also have a carbon filter, but I got sent the 4 inch instead of the 6 inch I ordered so I am debating getting a reducer or getting a 6 inch carbon filter and saving the 4 inch for my future veg/clone room.

The bagseed was germinated and planted on 9/21 and is starting to sprout, but is just breaking the surface of the rapid rooter. The other seeds were germinated and planted on 9/23 and hopefully will begin breaking the surface tomorrow. All plants are already in the grow room under the 600w HPS turned down to 300w on the ballast in the 12/12 light cycle. Once they sprout I will have to keep a close eye to make sure the HPS isn't too strong for the sprouts, but I can put my hand on the glass of the hood right now with no problem so heat is not an issue at 300w.

I may or may not post pictures for security reasons, but I will keep you all updated on the progress of the grow and will answer any questions and would love any input from you more experienced growers.

I probably will end up posting them right now there's not much to look at. The bagseed in the solo cup did sprout but its just barely breaking the surface I took a look inside the rapid rooters and the rest of the seeds are getting close to the surface too so I left out the piece of rapid rooter I had stuffed on top of them to make it easier for them to get out. I'm gunna take a look at them to see if any of them sprouted before the light cycle kicks on and I may leave the lights off for tonight to let them all sprout if they haven't by then. (The light is timed to come on in about 5 hours.)

All the hulls have broken the surface of the rapid rooters, but just barely so I am leaving the light off tonight and will start it up dimmed to 300w tomorrow night. Growing weed is like watching grass grow lol. I just watered them it looks like all of them should successfully sprout and since they are fem'd i am hoping for all females and no hermies. I also added 4 more bagseed into rapid rooters in solo cup hempys after germinating them in a paper towel until their taproots were a good length. Again i dont know if any of the bagseed will be carried to harvest and they are obviously not fem'd so I will have to toss a few males I'm sure.

I just used tweezers to remove the remaining helmets and the clear membrane from under it. I don't know if they usually fall off naturally, but they didn't seem necessary now that they made it to the surface. I decided to put them on 18/6 for tonight and maybe the rest of the weekend we will see the light comes on in about 3 hours and I'll keep a close eye on them after that to make sure the HPS isn't too strong. I turned it down to 300w and it is about 3ft away from the seedlings so I think they will be okay heat will definately not be an issue while the light is dialed back to 300w, the hood is warm to the touch but not hot, at 600w it's a little hotter, but still shouldn't cause an issue with 400CFM of air circulation.

They seem to be growing well under the HPS so far, it's been on for about 8 hours now they still have another 10 to go, but as long as they all look healthy tomorrow I will probably switch to 12/12, I only switched to 18/6 today so the lights would come on sooner because the older sprouts were starting to look a little limp. Here's a few shots after being under the HPS.

One of the Raspberry Cough has to two top leaves still stuck together on one side (Picture #5), I am hoping it just needs to stretch a little more, but if not I have an extra Raspberry Cough seed so I will probably just throw out this one if it doesn't correct itself and replace it. Let me know if you guys see anything I'm missing health wise since this is my first grow I don't want to miss anything. A few other's seem to have limp leaves, but I am assuming that is normal?

The plants are going to be watered with 50% nutes every feeding from now until they are ready for full strength, I had been giving them 50% every other feeding until now I have been watering every day and will continue to until the roots his the reservoir in the hempy, then I will back off to once every two days unless the plants need more. Straight perlite would rock, I am sure.

I will need to be watered a lot, but soooo much air will
get to the roots.

Good luck OP.

This is my first grow so I don't have anything to compare it to, but i like it I don't think it would work well if you weren't doing a hempy bucket or hydro. It dries out pretty quick and you would need to hand water at least once if not twice a day once the plant developed a root mass. Only bad part is you have to water slowly and carefully or else the top layer will flood and my rapid rooter starts floating away and falling over so ebb and flow systems probably wouldn't suit 100% perlite either. It's really cheap though!

On another note I accidentally killed the bagseed in the solo i dropped one of the larger buckets on it by accident after I watered, but I wasn't planning on carrying that to harvest anyways and I have 4 more bagseed germinating in rapid rooters for another day before they'll go in the room anyways I may or may not carry some of those to harvest some will be killed for being males I'm sure.

Excuse if any of this didn't make sense I'm high as shit

Can someone tell me if it is normal to need to take off the "helmets" or the shell for seedlings or do they usually do it themselves? If they do usually do it themselves how long should I wait before I get concerned about one not being shed? I am using rapid rooters and don't have a humidity dome if it is relevant.

I just popped a slew of beans and I had to help several off.

You can score the shell before you pop them.

Good luck,

The raspberry cough I am guessing? I am hoping for a really good flavor and a potent high I've read a lot of good strain reviews on rasp cough from nirvana. The white widow should be extremely potent but I don't think it's known for its flavor and I don't know anything about DinaChem lol.

Is there any harm to removing them as soon as they break the surface, assuming you are careful and use sterile tweezers??

Yessir, the raspberry cough is awesome!

Well their first (and only) 18 hour light cycle just ended. The White Widow, DinaChem and one Raspberry cough look good. Two of the other raspberry cough have curling leaves for the first set of leaves i'm hoping they correct themselves or I will be pretty mad at Nirvana. The one plant that had the two leaves stuck together was separated by me last night, I am not sure how it will recover, but I will keep a close eye on it if it starts to fall behind i'll probably replace it with my last raspberry cough seed.

Do you guys think the plants will be stressed if switched from 300w hps to 600w at this stage? The ballast is currently dimmed to 50%, but I am unsure when I want to crank it up to 600w keeping in mind it's a 12/12 light cycle and the light is more than 2 feet away from the sprouts I'm not worried about heat I just don't want too much light for them too early.

Edit: Well I switched it over to 600w I will keep an eye on the plants until I go to bed to make sure they do not have any adverse reactions. The 6 main plants I imagine will be fine as they are green and growing pretty rapidly. I am slightly concerned about the 4 bagseed which are a little younger and more white/yellow than green, but I can put them out of the light after a few hours and keep them in the dark for another day or two so they can strengthen up.
