First time cabinet grow-Input requested

I have been lurking for a bit sponging info and boy this is a great site for that. Way too many people have indirectly helped me already to list, so thank you to all!! Wife and I are Med mj patients looking to offset cost of medicine and possibly be vendor to local dispensary to further offset costs.

Have grown a few plants outside from seed with a little luck, but have decided to look into a stealth cabinet grow for 7-10 plants. I like the design of the Supercloset deluxe, but from what I see heat and ventilation are issues. I will be putting this in my garage in So. Cal so temps can get high. If necessary, I will get a portable A/C to cool during the high heat times and run lights at night. The SC deluxe is also way more than I want to spend as I am handy with tools and believe I can improve the design for less $$.

The Cabinet is a monster 78x48x24 as seen here:http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/storage/cabinets/storage/paramount-storage-cabinet-easy-assembly-48x24x78-tan-2?infoParam.mode=1&infoParam.itemKey=30077834#tabs I plan on painting it with flat white rubber paint so cleaning is easy. May put mylar in high reflective areas for kicks and giggles, necessary?

I want to separate it with 2/3 up top for flower and 1/3 for clone/veg. I will be making 2 of these as my folks want in on the game as well, so I will probably make a separate smaller box just for 2 - 4 mothers.

For the top I plan on using a 400 hps with a cool tube (6" to 4" reducer on each end) 4" ducting with a S&P TD100 on low (97cfm) to cool the light. Consensus on cooltubes? Should I go with a small air cooled rectangle fixture instead? For below, I want to use a three foot 4 or 6 tube T5 for the clones and short veg cycle. Any problems with either of these?

For box ventilation I will use 2-4" black elbows (either inside box or on back) on bottom for passive intakes. The shelf will have either 2-4" or 1-6" elbow so air can move from below to above. At the top I will use a Can filter 33(max cfm 250) pared with a S&P TD150(293 cfm) with speedster fan controller. (I want to be able to run fan @ 1/2 to 3/4 speed to keep noise down) Is this way over kill on ventilation? Not enough? Can too much air flow be bad?

Want to go hydro, thinking a drip system out of rubbermaid containers for each as they seem to be shorter than ebb and flow and I am dealing with a bit of vert clearance. I am thinking of 350 gpm pumps and air stones for both systems. Is drip good for veg and flowering? Should I go a different direction? Those Turbogardens ebb and flows look nice for out of the box application, but again might be too high and sacrificing some growing inches.

For the actual growing, what brand of nutes does everyone seem to have the most success?

I know a pH meter is necessary, but what about a ppm meter? Are any other electronics necessary or help greatly for the novice? Best brand to use?

As I mentioned, I have found some cheap ~$75 portable A/Cs on C list to cool the garage during the dog days, but would a DIY water chiller be necessary as well?

My main hanging points are the box ventilation and either cool tube or rectangle fixture for hps.

Thank you in advance for any ideas or possible problems I have not thought of yet.

That is almost the exact cabinet setup I'm thinking of using for my flowering setup.

Personally I'm now hooked on CMH lighting, so I was thinking of running 4 400 watters on two "shelves". My veg and cloning area would be contained elsewhere. I'm currently using SOG in my "experimental" cabnet and I'm pretty happy so far but I have not got any completed and flowered plants.

Some other avenues I was thinking was to use 6-10 100w cmh's with digital ballasts to give a more even light spread, but I also like the standardize things and i'm already using 400w CMH's.

I was going to partition off one section to allow installation of a C02 tank and the controlling hardware for the cabnet. This would also be my buffer area before filtering and exhausting excess heat.

Personally I am still undecided what feeding method to use, but right now I'm all manual wateromg with hydroton / promix 50/50.

Just an update. The cabinets are supposed to arrive today! The garage is slowly getting filled up with boxes, especially since I am getting 2 of everything for my box and my parents. I ditched the idea of 2 chambers, because I just didn't want to deal with the vert problems. I have a source for clones and small veg plants, so for now I will just get the clones and veg under the hps for a week or two and then flower. I want to try and get a grow under my belt before the heat arrives. I figure for my first grow, I don't want to fight adverse conditions and make things that much harder on myself. I already got another small wire shelf unit that I plan on making a clone/veg box in a month or two.

I got a 400w hps lumitek ballast and a Daystar hood. The can 33 filter was way to heavy to hang, so I went with the 2600 that will allow me to run it at 110 cfm, which will just help to keep the noise down even more, but still give my 2 air changes per minute. For intake I got 2 adorama 8x8 darkroom vents that will be at the bottom on both sides. I figure I would rather see that 2 are too many and tape one up than not have enough intake(not to mention I am not sure of the air flow restriction they cause). I also decided to just run the exhaust out the sides at the top instead of out the back and having to have the cabinet 4-5" from the wall. Once I start working on the cabs, I will start posting pics.

I am looking to set up a grow room in the closet of my house, I would like to know, what kind of light setup do I need and where is the best place to purchase them

Unfortunately, i know when to admit I don't know shit. I know a little bit, but not enough to give advice, just a beginner myself. Search around on here and you will find everything you need to know. Jorge Cervantes' Marijuana enclopedia is a great book as well.

As far as purchasing the equipment, a local hydro store, or just google hydroponic supply and there are a bunch. Better grow hydro and worms way seem to have good prices.

Update, Got the cabinets and painted them with some Henry's 587 roof coating that says it is 97% reflective of suns rays, but since I did not ruff up the inside the paint peels really easy. For now I will just have to be careful. Started lining things up and the daystar hood was too big, fortunately bought at a store so exchange for cool tube was easy.
The cabinet has shelve slots all the way to the top, so I am going to use a shelf to mount the fans, can filter (actually 9000 not 2600 like I stated above) and cooltube. Much stronger (350 lb max) than mounting to top. The turbogarden arrived yesterday, can't wait to play with it tonight! Also got a Baby Bloomer and a T5 4 bulb for veg.

When I was cleaning my cats shit box, got a great idea of using one to make a clone box. Get one with a cover for a door drill some holes for wires and a small fan, drop a prop tray in and it looks like a spare litter box!

Friday the real work will begin and start drilling holes and mounting everything. Still no pics, but none of real interest yet...

The box is done and the plants are in! Had to change a couple of things. The vent fan (TD150) airflow was just too loud, so I took the can filter out of the box and have the TD150 pushing into it. That made it practically silent, just a slight hum. The turbogarden came with a starter set of nutes and ph up and down, but I think they were old. I tried to ph the water and ended up using the whole quart and it only lowered it from 8.1 to 7.2. Went and got GH nutes and ph down and flushed the system. This time about 20 teaspoons to go from 8.1 to 5.7 (20 gal res).

A friend of a friend has a nursury dispensary, and I got 12 rooted clones of Double Chocolate Strawberry. I have not spoken with the grower, so not sure of the strains genetics other than a pure indica that stays small and bushy and flower cycle only runs about 7 weeks. He recommended running the GH advised 3-2-1 amounts for a 2 week veg. Only a couple have some roots popping out the bottom of the 3" rockwool, so for a day or two I will just flood the tray about an inch just to wet them down. I put one in the pot with the hydroton just for sizing, so that is why only one is in the pot. This morning the leaves were a little droopy, but after the 1" flood, about 15 minutes later they were picking up.

In summary, ph 5.78 last night, 5.90 this morning. ppm 1540 with a tap water starting value of 230. 400 watt hps cool tube about 12" above top of plants.

I did notice on a couple of the plants the leaf edges were pointing up a little (just the jagged parts). Is this something to be concerned about? how low should I eventually get the light to the plants? The roots are through the 1" rockwool and some are popping out the bottom of the 3" that the 1" were transplanted into.

First time posting pics, so i hope it works.

Rereading my previous post I noticed I talked about painting the inside with roof paint. Well, I had a lighbulb moment and realized I could hang mylar with magnets. Worked great! Anyhow as a new grower, any input is appreciated.

Not sure anyone is following this thread, but I will update it anyhow.

10 clones taken on 3/6, 2 on 3/9 of Double chunk strawberry. 9 are going strong despite the heat wave messing with me. 3 are just going slow. Have been hand watering the bottom of the rockwool until 2 days ago moved 9 to pots with hydroton and started flooding the tray for about 2 minutes 2x a day. The 3 slow ones are just sitting in pots with Hydroton on the bottom and still getting hand watered until more roots pop.

Got a few with the odd shaped leaves. If anyone knows the possible causes.

The edges are no longer turned up , but one looks like it has slight N def, or maybe ZN. The odd thing is they are all watered from same source. How does only one show the light green/yellow between veins?

I was told this strain stays really short and bushy, but it's crazy, the internodal length is at most 1/2 inch.

Will probably veg for another week or 2 before going 12/12.

I like your cab Jman. I wish I came across it sooner, I might have been able to stop you from painting your cabinet. Those things are powder-coated, nothing sticks to it. I'm subscribing and am inspired to post my medicine cabinet. Best of yields to you!

Thanks for the compliment. I took about 2 months of research and 4 weekends to build. The first actually took 3 weekends and the second took 1. Now that I got the hang of it I could probably bang one out in a 8-10 hour day. Yea, tell me about it with the paint, when we were putting them together anything that touched the side peeled the paint. Big effing waste of time!!! I ended up putting up mylar and attaching it with magnets for easier cleaning and replacing.

Any ides on the odd shaped leaves?

The yellowing usually means they are taking root, so no worries. Make sure you mist the clones at least twice a day. They do not have the root system
to drink water from the bottom. They also love close to 100% humidity.

I don't know what that is but I get it from time to time too. It seems to be the new growth that does that, it should not give you any problems.
I spoke with the original grower, and he said I was over watering from looking at the pics, so I am just flooding the table once a day for about 2 minutes(at 2 minutes water level is about 2" from bottom of pots which gets about 1/4-1/2" of the RW). They 9 good ones seem to really be taking off and getting really bushy, there is new growth coming out all over the place. One of the runts is starting to perk up as well.

They now all have roots out the bottom of the 3" large RW. The worst of the 3 runts has just 1 popping out, but the strong ones have a lot out the bottom and sides.

One odd thing I noticed this morning is that my res ph went down from last night. Last night it was perfect 5.80 and this morning it was 5.77. Yesterday morning I adjusted from 6.11 to 5.4(still getting used to amount of ph down to use) and had to add some ph up. Can the ph up wear off in 24 hours?

Time for more research:confused:

The PH change in your rez is happening b/c the plants are drinking and the nutrient solution is becoming less diluted. How are the water levels in your reservoir? you may just need to top off your tank
