First time grower could use some advice

Hey so as the title says I am a first time grower and I could use some advice. I am growing 2 plants and they are both 5 weeks from seed and they are still pretty small and I know that it was because of stress due to cold temps at night, ph issues and over watering in the first 2 - 3 weeks which slowed growth down alot I'm sure. I hav them in 1 gal pots at the moment and like I say they are still pretty small, about 6-8 inches and it takes a good 5 days before the soil is dry enough to water again, however, they are both showing alternating nodes and what I believe is the start of pre flowers and I would like to switch to flower ASAP because I don't have much height in my grow room and what I'm wondering is should I transplant them into bigger pots before I flower or will the 1 gal be ok? Because I know transplanting during flower is a bad idea and I know if I have to transplant again before flower that ill have to wait probably a week or 2 before they're even ready to be potted up and another week after that to let them adjust to the new pot and I fear by that time they will be too tall to fit in my space once flowering is underway...what should I do? Wait and repot when ready and hope they don't outgrow my space or just leave em in the 1 gal and hope for the best? They are both from bag seed and this is more or less a trial run before I start with my fem seeds so yield isn't a huge concern for me I just wanted to make sure I had the basics down before I grow the fem seeds. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Most things I read say a gallon pot per foot of height so 3ft=3gallon pots but Ive seen people go to flower and be fine in one gallon pots and 3ft plants or scroged plants. personally I wouldn't roll with anything smaller than three gallon pots it up to you, and I flip at 30 days from sprout...its all a matter of prefrence I guess..life usually finds a way to survive.

Thanks Chingown, and does that mean 1 gal per foot of height that you think it'll be at the end of flower or when you start flowering? And sorry I have no pictures, I managed to break the screen on the camera so pictures are useless..

One gallon per foot of finished height is a good starting point.

Alright well I have them lst'd as well but if I didn't have them tied down they would be around 6-8 inches but tied down they are like 3-4 so would I go by the actual length of the main stock or the height the plant is actually sitting at? Thanks!

The height they would be without training, because the roots reflect the overall mass of the plant. But again I don't think this is an absolute rule, its just a starting point. It really depends on lots of variables, grow style, strain, light, etc.

Thanks Merlin that makes sense, so if they are indica strain and I flip to flower at 8" I should end up somewhere around 16" or so? I read indica doubles in height during flower and sativa triples on average, sometimes more

No I worded that poorly I was talking about pot size in general as compared to the plant if your plant is 3ft they say you will need a 3 gal pot to contain the roots... the size of the pot has little to do with how big the plant will end up being.
