Opinions differ, there are people who do it both ways. A gradual change is more natural obviously. I was using 24/0 lighting, because the plants had never seen the dark I gradually changed the schedule over 5 days or so and didn't have a problem. Because you are already giving them 18/6 you probably wouldn't have a problem going directly to 12/12.

I also have one strain that can hermie which is another reason I chose to change gradually.

It really isn't necessary, you can switch to 12/12 imediately, there's no need for that.

you should get a rheostat and gradually turn up the light every morning and down every night, shouldn't take more than a half an hour.

In the morning you should sing "Here Comes the Sun". At night you can just sing any lullaby.

I veg for 2 months, then change the schedule 5 minutes a day, which takes another 72 days from 18/6 to 12/12, then 75 days of flower, 5 day dry and 2 months of cure time. All total about 250 days. I grow one plant usually and it usually turns out to be a male after all that work. Oh well, I like the challenge.

what lighting do you use?
i veg for 4 weeks to the day and always have preflowers when i flip, with a 4 week veg i average 4oz per plant with 10 plants under 2x600s

nature isnt bang on everything, look at topping, lst, scrog, sog.
you do what you think will be best for your plants to give you the best fruits for your labour.
i even tried a diminishing light schedule, reducing light 30 mins every 2 weeks of flower
i mean where in the world gets 18 hours sunlight a day? these are nearing 8 weeks in flower.

I use 40W bulbs from the dollar tree, 3 total. But I do wear my petzel headlamp to sneak peeks during the lights out period so there's a little extra lumenage. I was going to try the molasses thing once, but I was short on $ that day so i just bought pancake syrup.

(Editors note: This is total sarcasm)

Generally there should be no problem flipping direct to 12/12. If you are growing bag seed or recently "engineered" genetics it might be a good idea to ease the transition to reduce the hermie possibility. It is an individual judgment, thousand ways to skin a cat...

Topping and LST do happen in nature, deer eats the plant... topping, hog tramples it... supercropping, something falls on it etc... lst.
