heys guys im a newb to indoor growing attempting my first indoor grow from bagseed. I would have done it sooner but I was afraid it would cost too damn much. so my goal this grow is to grow two plants in my 7 foot 2 closet as inexpensively as possible withou losing yeild. so far I have been at it for a week I have 2 cute green sprouts in scotts topsoil (1.50 a bag), nute all mg plant food and bloom boost (6.00 a box), 3 75 watt flourescants (10.00 each), and two hps floodlights I rigged up for lighting :twisted:Dt (30.00 each even came with a bulb FUCK A BALLAST) any way my goal is to grow as inexpensively as possible feel free to comment or ask questions.

You're using a what? 50w self ballasted HPS? Can you take a picture? HPS ballast are super super cheap btw if you aren't picky. You can definitely get a 600w HID ballast for $60.

I assume they are really low wattage... HPS peaks efficiency at ~600w. I can't imagine a 25w or 50w HPS putting out many lumen/w. Most likely around the same as a CFL but in a less usable spectrum.

I think you have that a little wrong bro .. the 600w gives out 600w of light .. a 50 watt gives out 50 watts of light .. same light spectrum .. same lumens/w. They just cover different size areas, so you can see it really doesn't matter what wattage an hps is, it is still an hps.

You are very very wrong. Lumen/watt changes drastically as you go up and down the wattage scale for all lights, CFL, tubes, HPS, MH, MV...

Go compare the same brand bulb in 50w, 250w, 600w, 1kW when it comes to lumen/w. Easy easy thing to look up online. Or compare a 5w clf to a 48w cfl to a 250w cfl. Peak efficientcy for CFLs are 45-65w.

Heres a plusrite LU70 70w HPS bulb at 90lumen/watt http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/4986/LU0070-0001.html
Heres a plusrite lu400 400w HPS bulb at 125 lumen/watt http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/4986/LU0070-0001.html

A 50 watt hps puts out 4000 lumens a 600 watt hps puts out 90000. it would take 22 50 watt bulbs witch = 1100 watts to = a 600 hps.

You can grow dank under 4 foot floros and a couple yard lights you can just buy them at a hardware store you will need some good wire and plug in ends wire nuts and electrical tape. Its 50$ or so for a light fixture but comes with a bulb. no need for the ballast. Ive done this before

If they are hps floods, that's the best low wattage lamp for flowering you can get. Sure its not as good as a 600w, but still better than cfl or t5. The op did good on a low diy budget. Stop being bitches people. Fuck, everyone starts somewhere. Don't be a grow snob.

Why post if it is just gonna make you look foolish? It is common knowledge that a 600w HPS is the most efficient HID.

didn't disagree it was the most efficient ... was commenting on him saying the 50watt wasnt the same spectrum and and hps no matter what size is the same spectrum .. I was mistaken on the lum/watt. But instead of making a big deal out of it ... maybe you should have actually read what was posted. You would of realized I didn't say anything about the efficiency ...

I was saying that per lumen CFLs put out more PAR compared to HPS. CFLs have a better spectrum but large HPS put out more lumen/w. If your lumen/w drops on the HPS to being equal to a CFL then the CFL is delivering more PAR to the plant. I don't believe I ever compared the spectrum of HPS vs HPS.

I don't think anyone is trying to bash the OP we're just wondering what the hell he's using... But I would have to argue that low wattage (>100w) HPS floods are not the best low wattage bulb you can get for flowering.
