gro op poisoning me

Hi,

I desperately need help! I own a townhouse, one of a duplex building. My neighbors of 6 mos. have turned my life upside down. They (the address is all that is verifiable in Oregon) are registered medical marijuana growers. No problem. However I have noticed noxious odors and vapors in my house since they moved in. Initially I thought Meth lab, but recently learned about the gro license. I was told that pesticides and/or fungicides, etc. used in the production can be a problem. If so, does an indoor gro generate enough fumes to make one sick? Legally they could only be growing as many as 24 plants. Could that environment produce this kind of air pollution? Is this ever a problem? I smoked enough pot in the 60's and 70's to hold me over :) and I don't anymore, but I do not make judgments about others smoking growing or selling or even partaking in other drug activities.

HOWEVER...the exposure to their venting has given me lung, nasal and throat damage...have had to leave my home. The group of guys that own the next door TH and are registered pot growers have been unresponsive to my hinting around and laughed at my suggestion to 'call the Gas Co'. I have not been confrontational as they are involved in shady business activities and have made subtle threats. I am a 54 yo woman, 'hip' I thought, but not so much so when the behavior of others hurts me w/o my consent.

I have no idea how to remedy this problem. Your feedback is appreciated.

Well first off, why don't you talk to them about your concerns. Let them know that you know they are legally growing, and tell them about any health problems you feel may be caused by their growing. Let them know that you are not joking, but rather serious.Honestly I don't know what they would be venting out that would make you sick. The smell of the plants can be stinky and annoying I suppose but this should not pose much of a health risk.

Perhaps there is another cause for your health problems ?

I don't think the plants themselves could cause health problems, I'd think yeah they could be using some kind of pesticide/fertilizers that shouldn't be used in excess with indoor grows..

You could try talking to them first and seeing if that could be the problem.. Just explain that its not the pot thats the problem and you don't have issues with that its just something is getting into your apartment and causing you illness.

And if they don't at least try to work with you on that then you can contact your local PD about it, as the EPA has rules for this kinda thing, not to mention they may be able to get someone over there to check and make sure it isn't anything else that could be causing the problem.

Y'all are awesome!! Thank you.

I'm so happy to have your comments and general take on this. I agree with you about talking openly with them and am going to do so after I think it through.

This all began last fall with some very gnarly odors penetrating the common fire wall between our townhouses. I thought the boys were just smoking some dope laced with 'whatever' as I had done things like that a long time ago...days before crack was around we put coke among other things in the joints. So, I let it be for a while. Then one day the air completely overpowered me on the stairwell. The smell was awful, sickening, kind of like clove cigarettes and burnt plastic together. I knew this was wrong and then knocked on their door...do you guys smell something really bad??? they said, "no, I can't imagine what it is..." Anyway, that was the last time the smell was that strong or bad and in fact has changed pretty much since then. I still have curiosity about a lab of some sort. They go outside to smoke cigs, are secretive, have expensive cars, several businesses, bragged about owning several properties together in a real estate investment group...and they are 25 years old. I don't know tho and thought maybe I have just been paranoid. The townhouses are new and very nice but we are isolated. They have said many times that it is a perfect location we lived in although I considered it marginal and bought with future growth in mind. My mind has wandered into thinking they may ultimately want to buy me out a discount flip the houses after they're done. An interesting scam.

Since the awful smell stopped, they must have changed recipes, I don't detect an odor so much now as I notice is my skin prickling, eyes burning, throat hurting, after about 20 mins. in the house. Others have noticed it as well. Sometimes I get lightheaded and have a chemical metallic taste in my mouth. I have been a gardener for 30 years, can identify specific pesticides and ag chems, but none like this. Still if they are combined they might act differently.

Even though these things have not summoned thoughts of a marijuana nursery, but because this has been so frustrating, I sleuthed recently and it was then I found out their address is registered as a grow house. I called and spoke with a vice police officer, curious about his read on the situation. He suggested the kinds of things I have been experience are often associated with gro ops. I was stunned. Just doesn't ring true to me or make sense ...but I'm out-of-the-loop so to speak and what do I know. I am left to conclude that if the boys next door are using enough stuff on the plants to make a neighbor sick, some unfortunate soul or two who is getting marijuana treated with nasty agricultural chems in the process of helping themselves. Sad.

Not a good picture anyway I look at it. I am still trying to piece this together and I like your honest approach...talk openly with them. Have to try. Thanks again. I'll update the post so you can find out the end of the story!

ps. I have tried to hire professional chemical testing companies to help me sort out this out. My liability and health issues. They won't touch this though w/o an attorney's request. Interesting.

Oregon is very protective of those anywhere on its medical marijuana registry, (all good) however there are no guidelines or legislation for control of the 'production' -just conscience and karma.

It's a crazy situation. I can see $$ disappearing daily...I can't live in or sell or rent.

i would be willing to bet their is more goin on in there other than pot or cigarettes. meth, crack, etc will provide noxious odors that could overpower someone.

Agreed. There is something going on. 24 plants don't require that many chemical fertilizers.

i just had to post this for anyone who didnt read the links: Meth causes health problems not just for the users, but also for others who are unintentionally exposed to the chemicals.

The risk of injury from chemical exposure depends on the chemical itself, the concentration, the quantity, and the length and route of exposure. Chemicals may enter the body by being breathed, eaten, injected (by a contaminated needle or accidental skin prick), or absorbed by the skin.

Acute Exposure: An acute chemical exposure is one that occurs over a relatively short period of time and may result in health effects. An acute exposure to high levels of contaminants found in meth labs cause shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, dizziness, lack of coordination, chemical irritation, lesions and burns to the skin, eyes, mouth and nose, and in severe cases, death. Acute reactions of this nature could occur during or immediately after a drug bust, before the lab has been ventilated.

Less severe symptoms resulting from a less acute exposure cause headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue or lethargy. These symptoms have been known to occur in people who have entered a drug lab after the bust has been completed, but before the property has been adequately cleaned and ventilated. These symptoms usually go away after several hours.

Corrosive Effects: Inhalation or skin exposure may result in injury from corrosive substances present in a meth lab. Symptoms range from shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, to burns to the skin.

Solvents: Exposure to solvents can irritate the skin, mucous membranes, respiratory tract, and cause central nervous system effects. They are also dangerous because of their fire and explosive properties.

Chronic Exposure: Chronic exposure occurs over an extended period of time, such as weeks, months, or years. A chronic health effect is one that usually appears after a lengthy period of time, possibly years. Not much is known about the chronic health effects from these labs. However, there is scientific evidence from animal and human toxicity studies that shows the chemicals used to manufacture meth can cause a range of health effects include cancer, damage to the brain, liver and kidneys, birth defects, and reproductive problems, such as miscarriages.

First off you should realize that if it is a Meth lab you need to slow the fuck down with all this cop calling & think about what a couple of meth heads running a lab are gonna do to your ass if you keep calling the police, the police will not be able to help you.

I would knock on their door & ask them if they could meet you out front & talk for a while, take a six pack of beer with you, explain to them that something in the building is releasing odors or vapors that are making you sick, also explain to them that you have no desire to meddle in anybody elses personal business but your getting sicker by the day & your home has become unlivable.

Then let them know very nicely that if you keep getting more i'll you will have to get an air quality test done to see whats making you sick.

You gotta think before you start calling cops especially calling cops on people who may be taking a drug that leaves people delusional & violent.

honestly, i'd call the police, and say it smells like a gas leak, they will be over really quick to check it out.

befor doing that go over and tell them about the recent health problems. see what they say. they have no right to do anything that effects your health.
