Grow Tent Setup Advice

Hi Everyone,

I've been a lurker here for a while, and I've finally decided to take the plunge now that I'm legal.

My biggest problem is that I live in a place that even though I'm legal, they want the smell and noise to be minimum. I also have limited space to work with, and can't modify the place (yes, an apartment, yes they are ok as long as I'm legal and nobody complains about smell).

I've looked into the different prefab grow boxes, the bcnl boxes look really cool, but they are pretty expensive for the size, so I've been researching tents.

Unless told a good reason, I will likely be starting off doing soil, since everything I've read said its easier to start there, and I'd like the least chance of screwing stuff up :)

I'd like to have one tent for veg, and one tent for flower, and based on everything I've read, people like the Secret Jardin the best (mostly).

I'd like to be able to grow my maximum of 12 plants, so I was thinking of either of these tents for the veg.

Secret Jardin Dark Room Pro DR120 II Grow Tent
Dimensions: 47" x 47" x 79", approximately 4' x 4' x 6.5'

or Secret Jardin Dark Room Pro DR90 II Grow Tent
Dimensions: 35.5" x 35.5" x 71". 2.96' x 2.96' x 5.91'

Question 1: Do you think the smaller of those would be big enough for the veg tent?

The one I'm looking at for the flowering tent is

Secret Jardin Dark Room Pro DR150 II Grow Tent
Dimensions: 59" x 59" x 79", approximately 5' x 5' x 6.5'

Question 2: Is that tent big enough for 12 plants, or should I go one size up to 8' x 8' x 6.5'

Question 3: Once the best size of the tents is determined, I'd like to find out which lights (brands, size, etc etc) that you guys would recommend for each of them.

Question 4: What all (besides lights and carbon filters) would I need to get one of these ready to go? (I'd like to buy it all at the same time so it gets here at roughly the same time.)

I really appreciate any help you guys can give, I know I'm new at this, but I want to learn, and I've been reading as much as possible to try to avoid making costly mistakes.

Thanks!

Hey Friend, welcome to RUI

You have definitly done some good research let me see if I can help. you have 12 Plants, 1/2 mature, 1/2 immature allowed

For Veg you indicated you want either a 3x3 or 4x4 tent...

I would go with the 4x4 minimum, more space is always better if you can fit it. You do not HAVE even to get a secret jardin (as the are $$$), there are 4x4 tents for half the price but the jardin are nice, I hack mine apart for holes cause every manufacturer only puts small holes that cant fit 8" or 12" lines and you will always find a way to hack yours up eventually.

For lighting this tent you will probally want a good 400-600w light. Digital will help you here alot. (400w MAY NOT need air cooling but is rather week, 600W WIll)

AIR COOLED Even for the 400 just in case... Good XTRASUN 8" or 6 " with glass, many manufactures about $100 a hood...

Ballast... 600w Lumateks/ Quantums/ Phantom (cheaper) alots of cheap brands about $125.00

Bulb $DIGILUX!!!$$$ $72.00 Hortlux good too.

You will need a good fan 6"HO CaN FAN MINI PREFER 8" MAX FAN to drive most of this light setup depending how hot your ambient is.

Hopefully you have access to FRESH air somehow through a window you could put in a A/C vent or maybe if your handy build a WINDOW BOX (Advanced)
Create ports that you duct Fresh?FILTERED AIR into your room and EXHAUST through a seperate window the same way.

This would require 2 extra Fans one for the carbon filtered air and another for the intake air.

You can get a cheap controller that will cycle the fans to keep your room at your desired tempature.

For your flowering

(You mentioned you cannot modify your place very much and the whole setup kinda needs to collapsible style!)

You can fit 6 plants into a 5x5 or you could spread it out and double your lighting, your choice based on what you can afford to buy and put into your place.

Go for the 8x4 or if you can fit it a 5x10 tent... you could fit 2 600W or 2 1000W!!!

600w Are more effiecient but a Fine tuned grower can extract more in a shorter time from a 1000W, but not always the bezt. so if this is about quality over quantity go for 2 600w's your heating/electricty will thank you.

ALSO many 600w's or even the 1000's Digital are now DIMMABLE so you could do whatever you needed

You are gonna need a MIN 8" MAX FAN -12" CAN FAN just to run the Lighting setup. Cn You exhaust through windows or???

If you want to run sealed you go the A/C route, other than that you just have scale up the veg room from above with intake/exhaust fans

Also Of course this is a recipe for 3 LARGE plants a LIGHT in flower 6 IN VEG, 6 IN FLOWER harvest every 60 days... You can get as much as 1.5 months of veg and training into a plant with two rooms like this and 3 plants can easily create enough healthy foilage for a 600-1000w light to produce heavy...

at First You may not do 1/4 this but soil is very forgiving and great for begginers.

You can always cut this in half and put all 6 of your plants under 1 light in a 5x5 and veg 6 plants in a 3x3 and even though you will reduce your veg time, your veg tent will just be sitting there doing nothing 90% of the time your 6 plants are flowering.

CARBON FILTERs need to be CAN FAN brand for performance guranteed... they use REAL CKV-4 Pellitized carbon, alot of other brands sell crap that doesnt work 1/4th of the good stuff.

For your plants start with small containers then transplant into bigger better containers take a look at AIRPOTS tm they are awesome...

For your final POT SIZE can be anywehere from 5 gallon -25 gallons... You WILL need to CUT With PERLITE for costs Saving and Aertion of the Medium...

Nutrients to use on your plants FOX FARM awesome...
A GOOD PPM AND PH TESTED

Blue LAB New pens PH and PPM/EC seperate pens.
or OAKTEN PHteste35 MIN COMBO PEN.. (BEST THREE PENS OUT)

Your gonna need either 6" or 8" ducting and HVAC FOIL tape to seal everything.

Are you in a HOUSE or CONDO/APT??? this can make things hard

hey just want to throw out my 2¢ on tents. cheap chinese tents work well and like above poster said secret jardin are $$$$$$

if your doing 6 in 1 and 6 in another 2x 4x4 should be plenty unless your growing some monsters. use 2x 600w lamps. 2 carbon fiters, 2 rolls of 6" ducting and 2 inline fans (dont skimp on these the more you spend the better the fan.

go with 5 gal smart pots or nursery pots.

get a bag of FFoF if you can, a bag of perilite and 3 cu yard of pro mix, mix it all up and start nutrients in week 2 @ 1/4 strength, transplant right from solo cups into the 5 gal pots.

anyways im going off topic, i think lights, tent, carbon filter, ducting(dont forget hose clamps), fans, temp/humidity gauge, soil PH test kit, nutrients and some beans and you should be off to a pretty good start.

Hey BSmoke. Welcome to RIU.

First off let me say that growing in soil your first few times around is a fantastic idea. Less hassle, more room for error, and more stable plants. You want to learn your plants right and not have to worry about pumps, leaks, pH creep, reservoir algae, etc... Good choice.

I think 2 tents would be a really great plan in your situation. Just a couple things to think about.

I'm not sure how you plan on growing (SOG, SGCROG, Trees, etc...) but you want to size your tent to the lights you are using. You also want to stay away from 1000w lights in tents if you can. Often times because of limited height in tents 1000w lights can lead to cooling issues and restrict the height you can grow your plants. Since you said you want to grow your maximum of plants I am going to assume you are growing trees that may be topped or LST'd slightly. That being said I would suggest you look into a 4x8 tent with 2 600w lights. Those lights will have a perfect spread inside of that tent and the size will give you a little extra room if you need to place an a/c, dehumidifier, etc... inside of the tent. Plus it will give you a little room to work in there if need be. The problem with 5x5 or 8x8 tents is that they are odd sizes for the footprints of HID lights. A 5x5 would work perfectly with a 1000w light but you might run into cooling issues and restrictive plant heights. An 8x8 would create an uneven light pattern unless you were not planning on using the whole tent. In a 4x8 tent you will have plenty of room for 12 plants.

For your veg tent i am not sure if you plan on continually growing from seed or if you will keep a few mothers. You want to be able to keep clones, mothers, and vegging plants in this tent. I would suggest a 2x4 tent and if you are keeping moms then there are 2 companies that make what's called a clone tent. Basically the tent has an adjustable shelf which allows you to have your mother plants down below and your clone/vegging plants up top. If you are growing any taller than 14-16" in veg then you may want to look into something a little bigger as these tents are only 4' tall. I would suggest a 4x6 tent in that case.

Secret Jardin makes great tents from what I hear. I have never actually seen one but I have had some experience with GrowLab tents and can tell you they are a very high quality product.

Lighting will really depend on your budget. You can get online deals that include a ballast, reflector, bulb, etc... I am going to assume that you prefer to buy quality. That being said I would recommend Lumatek dimmable ballasts. I have used them for years and feel they are the best digital ballasts available. I've never had a problem with them and I actually own 13 of them right now. If you decide to go with 2 600w lights then Lumatek makes a 600/400w dimmable or a 1000/600w dimmable. You can save a lot of money with the 600/400w but if you have it in your budget and think that you may someday go with a larger grow then I would get the 1000/600w ones. Just make sure to run 600w bulbs in these ballasts when they are dimmed to 600w on the ballast. Running a 1000w bulb dimmed to 600w actually changes the light spectrum. Another option that would save you some money would be a dual ballast. Lumatek has a 600w dual ballast that is actually dimmable to 400/250w as well. These ballasts are actually only a few dollars more than just a single ballast. The one deciding factor for them though is that they HAVE to be wired 240v. So you would either have to have a 240v line nearby to tap into or you would have to bring one in from the breaker panel.

For your veg tent there are a number of routes you can go. If you get the clone tent then I think two 4' T5 systems would be perfect. The shelf will actually serve as a support for the light which you are using to light your mothers. Then you hook another system up top and use that for your clones and vegging plants. If you decide to go with a larger tent for veg then options are open for you. Since you are only doing 12 plants you won't need anymore then 2 moms and a T5 is perfect for that. If you want to though you can get another HID ballast for your vegging plants. You would just need to get some CFL's to clone them under.

Besides all that you really won't need much else. A good soil and additives. A simple nutrient plan. Pots, propogation tray, humidity dome, and heat mat. Digital thermometer/hygrometers with sensor probes. Reflectors (with 600w lights you don't need any of those XXXL ones). 2-3 inline fans and a carbon filter. Depending on your situation you may need a dehumidifier and you might have to intake cool air somehow.

Thanks for all the info guys! To answer some questions:

1) I'm in an apartment, but the room has a window I can vent out of.
2) The ambient temp in the house stays between 72-76 all year round.
3) I'd like to set it up in a perpetual manner where as soon as one set of plants is done flowering, I'm ready to move more from the veg tent into that one. (I can have a maximum of 12 plants at any time, so I'm assuming 6 in one, 6 in the other)
4) I was thinking of topping (high stress training) for the training, but am open to suggestions.

I really like the idea of setting the space up around the lights instead of the other way around, and if a 4x8 tent will give me what I need, then I'm all about that! I am also not tied to the secret jardin tents, especially if I can get a different tent that will work just as well for cheaper. I've heard great things about the growlab tents as well, so those are fine.

Assuming I went with phillipchristian's idea, I'd like to start pricing what I need out, because I'll likely be ready to buy this stuff next week. Is there somewhere that you guys like to buy this stuff online? I went to my local grow shop and everything seemed to be priced quite a bit higher than what I have seen online, though I'm not sure which online shops are reputable enough to buy from, so any suggestions there?

Again, guys, thank you very much for the help, I really appreciate it. I'd like to be as successful as possible and you guys are helping me do that! (and once it is all set up I'll be sure and post pictures!

Hey bud, couple things.

I think topping would be a good start for you in training your plants. It's easy to do and will improve results. You might want to look into LST as well. It's also really easy and a lot of tent growers like it because it keeps plant height down and increases yield.

Since you clarified that you are only going to have 6 plants in each tent then you definitely don't need a 4x8 tent. Depending on how big you are growing them and how bushy they get I would say you could size your flower tent down to a 4x4 which would be perfect for a 600w light. If you think you will need extra room for a dehumidifier or an a/c then go with a 4x6 or a 5x5. I still like the 2x4 tent for veg though. That is perfect size for 2 moms on bottom and your clones/veg plants on top. Then as the plants get bigger in veg you can move them down below with the moms.

Perpetual cycles are easy. From seed it's a little hard but if you are cloning you should have no problem getting one setup fairly quickly. Assuming you don't count your moms as plants you will want to have 12 plants between veg and flower. The easiest way is to do 4 week cycles. Take 3 clones and have them in pre veg under the dome for 2 weeks. Then veg them for 4 weeks. Then move them to your flower room for 8 weeks. After those first clones you will be taking 3 new clones every 4 weeks.

The best way to shop is to use all of the websites and information you find to put together a complete list of everything you need to order. The prices listed on most web pages don't mean anything. These are all highly negotiable. Once you have the list together then send it to 2-3 different online stores and ask them what they can do for you. Don't let them talk you into different geat as they like to do. The all have access to the same suppliers. Then when you find the store that will give you the best deal call them up and say you would like to buy from them because they look more reputable (total bullshit) but that another store actually came in a little cheaper. They will drop their prices again. Then go from there. I order high volume of stuff everyyear so I deal directly with 2 distributors. If you need help or want me to get you a quote then send me a PM. Good luck man.

I like Amazon.com, usually ships free and they have it all.

as far as lights go dont skimp on your light setup if you want something thats going to be warrantied and last a good while, lumatek has great products. to save a bit of cash go with a straight 600w for one ballast and then get a dimable 600w for your veg tent. your not always going to need 600w on clones and small plants.

the tent i would say go cheapo on, a grow tent is a grow tent just treat it nice and it will last. amazon.com has alot of tents for fairly reasonable price.

if you want to keep a perpetual going then a mother plant is definatly one way to go, you can also just clone off your vegging plants before you put them into flower and have a longer veg period. this will eliminate the need for a mother plant eventually and cutting 2 clones per plant right before they go into flower will ensure you get at least 6 viable clones and you can give away or trash the others.

so say you have 6 plants in veg and you just harvested, your ready to put these 6 plants into flower, they have been vegging for 6 weeks from when they rooted (usually takes around 2 weeks to fully root clones) a 6 week vegged plant will have more than enough nodes to take as many clones as you need plus some, get your clones then pop em into vegg, worst case scenario in 2 weeks if all the clones dont make it you have to cut more from the same plants 2 weeks into flower (not a big deal) but theres no reason why if you cut 10 clones you shouldnt get at least 6 to root as long as you do it right. just be carefull of fungus gnats and clones are a bad mix, the larvea eat the roots as they develop and the plants never have a chance, if you have or get gnats make sure they dont have acess to your clones untill they have established a good root system. once they establish a good root system the larvea dont eat enough to damage them

loads of info thanks, can i get your opinion on 2x 600w hps vs 1000whps in a 5x5 tent? also pot set up, i was thinking 3g smart pots veg (432w t5 8tube) and then 7g flower or should i go 10g?. i was going to use 6inch fan to cool lights running out of tent too filter (both hung right outside close to exit at top) also i was thinking i could take the glass off farthest light to vent inside the tent, ill have a 6inch fan at bottom bringing fresh air in but will the 6inch be enough with 3x clip fans? i want too SCROG,LST, and lollipop for trainning, id like too see 4plants under each light or even six but not sure pot sizes, ill be getting set up soon and want too do this right. shooting for the moon on yield at 900g, what are your suggestions?
