Heat pump?

Working on a new grow room/warehouse. Multiple rooms flower, veg., cure, extraction, mother. Contomplating using a "heat pump" for my heating and cooling. Basically will be the upstairs of a three car garage... heat pump would be installed in the main area and all air pulled from there thru each room individually or possibly from main area thru flower room into veg. Room and back to main area. What do you think?

Depending on how well the area is sealed/insulated, and how many BTU's it puts out, it might work, but it will just add more wear and tear on your compressor. Heat pumps, for the most part, work well as a supplement to another heating system. Larger units do exist, and some will swear by them, but there are far cheaper and more efficient sources out there. If you have natural gas available forget the heat pump immediately. Maybe snoop around for a used forced air or hydronic furnace? I've seen quite a few nice AC units, minisplits, furnaces, etc all under $1000 in very good shape.

As far as design goes, you didn't say whether or not the room would be sealed but I'll assume it isn't. If space permits, look into making a lung room, that way you can do as you wish with air thats the temp you want. Sky is the limit from there, just size your equipment and ducting properly. You could even utilize it for fresh outside air exchanges with out spending big $$ on an air handler type unit, like timing a fresh air intake to fill the room for 5 minutes every hour while dampers shut on the supply and return, closing intake damper then circulating that fresh air through the rooms and back through the "lung room" through a return system to keep it at a set point. Lots of different ways to make it work from there.

Why would you need a heater to grow cannabis? I'm confused . Mini splits with heating and cooling options work well .

If you are talking about a conventional split heat pump system you better plan on spending at least double what you think for sheet metal work, hvac tools to install heat pump properly, paying someone to design a balanced supply and return system. If you don't know how build a balanced duct system it will be loud and inefficient.

I am not even getting into the fines you can be given for not having a universal epa license when working with refrigerant.

Go with a multi head mini split system.

No I'm talking a heat pump with a single head unit mounted on the wall. No ducting required. I was thinking it would condition the main room the same way it would a house with a grow room in it. I'd just pull air from the conditioned room into the actual grow rooms. The air would enter the grow space conditio ed and exit back into the main room to get reconditioned. Do you know what I mean?

I live in an area where the temps got as low as -35f this winter with windchill. Even lights won't heat that much space I don't believe. I also thought the fact that it lowers humidity substantially. In the summer it can touch 100 f. Thought this would be a reasonable fix for both situations/seasons. What do you guys see as an issue? It would basically be like individual grow rooms inside a single house using the house air for the rooms.

Basically my "main room" you walk into would be my "lung room". Imagine walking into a 24x36 space devided into seperate rooms for each purpose...

A heat pump is a mini split.
All grow rooms should have mini splits yes. Reason I asked above questions is.. I grow in a sealed environment . Doesn't matter if it's -47 outside, if I don't have AC in my grow room it will be hotter than Africa. If you're pulling fresh air from outside into your grow.. Then that is a different story.

Heat pumps are more then 1800...more like 25,000$ My father sold these for 20 yrs so i know a bit about them. I dont think you are describing a heat pump at all and more like talking about exhaust and intake.

Nothing like that....I never seen this..IM not sure how they can consider this a pump. A heat pump goes in the ground and taps into the water table for cooling and the ground for heating. The reviews wernt so good on this product. Still not sure how it even saves you money ...looks like a reg hvac unit.

No, heat pumps are not mini splits. Mini splits are mini splits, they are available in cooling only and heat/cool. Heats pumps are A/c compressors that are capable of running in reverse. Please stop spreading wrong information.

Back to the OP. A minisplit heat pump system will not function at -35 outside temp unless you get into the specialized server room systems. If you are just looking for heat oil filled radiators will get it done. Past that I would recommend Hydronic heat or a converted gas furnace to run on propane.

If it is above the garage hydronic under floor heating would be killer.

Nailed it! This is the info. I was looking for! Really appreciate good advise. Nice to get in here and get the imagination flowing and not have to reinvent the wheel and rely on your own ideas and just get good direction. That's basically where I was going with this! I think I'll skip pulling air from the flower room into the veg. Room and back to lung room because I think it'll be a pain trying to fight humidity in each room. Instead, individual ducting over the space above the rooms from the lung room and adjust humidity with individual exhaust fans venting back to the lung room where I'll have a dehumidifier and the split ac.
Other ideas? Or advise? I've always grown in a single room...

Under floor "radiant" heating would be killer but I'd have to install a boiler correct? Granted I was a plumber for 15 years but still....not what I really wanna do. Rather have a plug and play I don't want to take a year to get it all together.
