Well, it is like I said several posts ago in this thread call an electrician. If the homeowner could decide the gauge of wire used for his main service then he could also figure out how much current the system could handle and then go from there.
You can find lots of good information on the Internet to steer a person in the right direction but like I said earlier I’ve already seen quite a few stupid comments on this thread that could potentially get a persons house burned to the fucking ground.
Once again if I was not knowledgeable about electricity or current flow or load testing I would call an electrician and have them come out and do an evaluation of my home electrical system and then I would move on and do whatever was needed fir my grow op

I just had an electrician in to add some capacity to my room. Only a 100 amp service but he added 80 amps to my room with a "pony panel".
80 amp sub panel from 100 amp service.... lol

Show me the stupid comments on this thread. This time no altering peoples words to make it seem unsafe.
We all need folks like you to keep folks like me in check but sometimes you gotta let it go.....you cant make stuff up to fit.

I didn’t change any words of anyone. You can’t gain 80 amps from a 100 amp panel. The service wire won’t hold the current. Are you thick skulled or what? The only way that will work is if the initial panel was under rated for the service coming in.

i’ll keep on since you started! The gentleman said he had 100 amp service and then he added a sub panel for 80 A
That leaves 20 A to power the rest of this whole fucking house.
Word for Word.
Now if he said he had a 100 amp panel and a 200 amp service Andy added an 80 amp sub panel that would be fine do you see the difference or do you need to Google it
I can be a dickhead too

It doesn't take much to start a war of words around here does it. I know everyone has different life experiences and opinions and they're entitled to them. I made a post of my upgrade back in the middle of January and it might explain it better.....maybe, but in a nutshell my grow does not and probably will never draw the 80 amps it could and I doubt if the rest of my house ever draws 20 amps. I know it's a little unorthodox but it's working great for me; never had so many plug-ins!

you must have all gas appliances.
Not much for appliances around my place and no gas option for me either; I live pretty rural. Electric stove but I'm not a big cook. No dryer, heat is a oil fired boiler that does my domestic hot water as well.

Your 100 amp panel multiplied by 120 volts is 12000 watts for the whole house. If you don't have a big draw on your supply already then 240 is a big step. Are the LEDs available with a 240 volt plug?
what exactly do you mean 240 is a big step are you just spewing out stuff or do you have a clue about how electricity works? just curious

Well I'm no electrical genius if that's what you mean. All the stuff I've bought since I've started to grow is 120 volt. I was talking the cash it would take to replace the fixtures if that member had already bought them. I don't think my LEDs are convertible to 240 volt.

im not trying to be a dick at all sir! Im simply saying that sometimes we can help an sometimes we cant. AND nowhere on this thread is there bad recommendations.
The guy said he had an ELECTRICIAN install an 80 in there. So we have to respect the man doing the job and assume he added everything up.

Had he said "I put an 80a pony tail on my 100a main so i could grow" Then of course we would all question everything about it but it didnt happen that way. Thats all im saying. I think Renfro said he put a 125 off of a 150...is that not safe ? Thats my only point.

It's a common tendency for people to gripe about giving electrical advise on here. I personally figure if someone asks then it's open game. Hopefully only those that have the knowledge will respond.

I pretty much feel the same and sometimes it helps for someone to chime in with "call the guy", im fairly unsafe when i work but that dont mean i give bad advice.

But that always isn’t the case, and I know licensed electricians that I still won’t trust. Yes we do hope knowledgeable people respond. We here on the RIU assume alot. And that can get people in trouble in all sorts of ways. I may have came off harsh but sometimes that’s better

No apologies required (but I'm impressed I got one) I didn't think you were being a jerk at all. I don't really mind having to justify a point I've made. If I fuck up then I like to think I can take the abuse, plus you know I really don't want to burn the place down. It's all good.
