I need help and I need it fast.

I am new to this forum page and my intention of joining is to seek advice on how to eliminate the odor of marijuana in a (rented) home. Ive Googled everything I know for about two hours and Im at a dead end.

I am having to move and leave the house Ive rented from the same lady for almost four years. She has always been so sweet during hard times, respectful of privacy (she NEVER came by to visit, did random inspections, etc. She never came INTO my house) and very forgiving if the month was a tough time for me. We have always been on good terms.

While I do not grow (so I apologize for anyone that could be upset with me for being on this page- I just need help from obvious experts) but I use. Heavy. I use mostly glassware but ive always had love for going and buying a classic swisher cigar and smoking a splif right before bed. I always have since highschool and throughout college. I was lucky as my parents didnt care- I made honors in highschool & university and their excuse was “hey if we smell it at least youre home safe right? just dont let the grades drop.” Yeah. It was cool. I was the good child of my family. & they respected my habits as long as I respected their rules.

Anyway. Its mid December & I have to be to a new location by February 1. I went to my landlords house simply to tell her I wont be renewing my lease at the end of January due to my circumstances. We chatted a bit, exchanging stories over coffee and she told a story about her friends daughter got on bad substances (obviously not marijuana but i dont know what i can and cannot say on here) and long story short- she told me she was against everything after venting about the girls situation. Yes, everything. This lady is the definition of a saint concerning these kinds of things. And I panicked. I figured I had known her long enough to where I would know if she was THIS against everything. The lady is SO laid back. So laid back I was sure she even smoked lowkey.

Im panicked. Im so scared that once my belongings are out & when she does the final inspection of my home, the odor will blast her & there goes my security deposit. & her respect for me.

I have done research. Im not looking to mask it, but eliminate it. Ive read where some recommend a carbon filter for your AC unit. IM thinking it cannot be that simple as to just buy a certain filter. What other steps do I need to take? (Other than Ive obviously stopped smoking indoors & I open the windows a bit during the day for a few hours.) Do I need additional supplies to help? What temperature does my house need to be? Anything regarding these questions or anything related would be of much help.

Pleassssse give some advice to a fellow smoker.

Most of the odours would stick to fabrics and pourus materials once your furniture etc is out u should be alright. Maybe wash down the walls, ceilings and windows put oscilating fans around the washed areas for a quick dry. Get as much fresh airnin as possible

Hold on let get this straight....You are worried about your old place smelling from smoking in it not growing. What do you smoke usually, blunts? Just open the windows and some air freshener should do and stop smoking in the house obviously. Once all your stuffs out only thing that should hold smell is carpet and anywhere you touched after touching weed like around light switches. Just take rubbing alcohol on paper towel to clean anything you touched with your weed hands

A steam cleaner for any carpets, and if you wash absolutely everything washable with a scented cleaner, that scent should be strong enough to mask any residual scent, at least for a while.
I don't know if it would come back after that, like cigarette odours can, all I have washed that had weed smoke smells were clothes.

so here's the great part, mj smoke doesn't linger as bad as cigarrettes. Air the place out realllllly well, steam clean the carpets and hardwood/tile, then buy a can of "Ona" gel and hide it in the AC duct ;). Will neutralize almost any lingering order and spread the lovely scent thru the house for a few months.

Soapy water will not remove tar/mj residue, it will just smear and make a worse mess. Get yourself a box of disposable alcohol wipes and use em liberally on anything that still smells.

#1 Calm down and smoke a joint on your couch.

#2 Head to amazon and order your correct size "Carbon Filters" for your home AC unit. (The same ones you change every couple of months)

#3 Smoke heavily for two days waiting PATIENTLY for your filters.

#4 Install filters and wait 24 hours. Viola, you will notice a difference pretty quick. Obviously try to smoke outside as much as possible at this point.

If you wash your apartment down, like a good tenant, with Pine Sol, she won't be smelling no weed for days and she will think you were a model tenant.

Hey!!! Depending on how you want to go about it you can fill the bath tub up with a half bottle of bleach. Run the water as hot as possible to create a steamy effect. That will definitely set a tone for a new smell until the pot smell naturally goes away (you can hide it with saying you’ve done some deep cleaning) I know it may sound crazy but it’s a technique cigarette smokers use. A personal way for me is boil some vanilla/ water and orange peels! Great production of smell.

If you need some serious stuff to cover up a smell this stuff will do it. After my lady finally quit smoking I used it in her car. The car hasn't smelled like cigarettes since but the stuff is so strong you could literally taste it for weeks. I had sprayed it on the carpet without reading the label that says to spray some on a cotton ball or piece of paper so you can remove it.

Paint the inside of the house. Dont use any of that low VOC stuff either... you want the stuff that reeks of chemical.

It will firstly, make the inside look more pristine, and you can tell your landlord you painted, which is a sign of care/respect for her property, and the paint smell will get rid of the pot smell.... mostly

Whatever is left, will likely be stuck in your fabrics (couches, mattress, bed sheets, clothing, etc. So be sure to clean all fabrics as best you can, prior to painting. I'd even recommend renting a carpet cleaner (if you dont own one) and clean any carpeting in the house, as well as using the handheld attachment for couches or other large fabric furniture that cant be washed other ways.

Clean the carpets/furnitures first, THEN paint, and you'll be good to go. That's EXACTLY what I did, in a similar situation. Homeowner was non the wiser, and praised me for going above and beyond to leave the house in better shape than I got it in

I would never want a tenant to make unauthorized "upgrades" to anything. Painting included.

I mean, you wouldnt want a tenant to leave your house reeking of weed either :p

So long as your keeping the color the same, and you have a good relationship with your landlord, and you dont do a half assed job, I cant imagine it being an issue.

In fact, I even asked my landlord if he had the paint (which he did) so I could "touch up" the walls... but your right. In general, doing anything to your rental property, especially if your lease specifically forbids it, is frowned upon.

But if were talking about the house smelling like pot, vs the house having nicely painted walls and clean carpets... he can take his pick
