Help! light turns off by itself

hey everyone. I was in my room today (i havnt moved my clones in yet i was going to tomorrow morning!!) and while i was in there checking to insure my nutrient solution was stable. The light was on, I was also making sure i have the temps under control. Everything was going great actually but while i was in there the light turned off! in fact it seemed like the surge protector restarted!. im not sure to be honest.

here's what i got:
I have a 1000 Watt HPS with Xtrasun ballast on a timer, my inline exhaust fan (Rs6HO inline exhaust fan 115v 1.2A 130W) and a Walmart osculating fan on one surge protector rated for 15A 125V 1875W also says 1000 joules but i think thats related so something else. the above is whats on the surge protector where the problem was.

what else is in the room:
I have one small pump (100GPH i THINK not positive), air stone/pump, and aquarium heater i think 50W.
My mother room is in the same room and has one walmart oscolating fan and a 400W old MH. its soil in the mom room btw. Im pretty sure im not exceeding my rooms capabilities.

after typing this i remember noticing my mother room light not being affected (I have one side not closed off yet because it wasn't needed untill i put my clones on the veg room, i could see the light on the wall it would of had to 'warm up' again . so actually it must be the surge protector?

the package for the surge protector also says "Clear poser auto shut-off safeguard" what does that mean? you guys think thats my problem? I have no idea but i know its bad for the plants to have their light shutting off all day. and i really need to put my girls under because their roots are exploding in my cloning tray. please someone with any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated

this post seemed rather long as i just scrolled up. I may seem a little scattered. i appologize , im tired and its been a long day getting everything ready and now that things seem to finally get dialed in. i came across this light problem. good thing i caught it though! imagine if it went unnoticed. please help me fix it.

Surge protectors/circuit breakers generally trip at 80% of their rated load, from what I read, so if it says 15a it will trip at 12a. With a 1000w hps and two fans you're cutting it a bit fine, I would run your light on it's own breaker and see if it still trips. If so there may be a problem with your wiring.

80% huh thats good to know. yea i put my light and fans on separate ones now. i also plugged in a digital clock in the surge with my light that way ill know if it goes out at any time, it'll be blinking the time ago it happened. hopefully all is well now. cross our fingers. and i might be posting a journal on here, not sure yet though. btw im doing two 2x4 trays under 1000w ebb and flow sea of green maybe like 12 in each tray (3 rows of 4) not sure yet. most likely ill be putting them in tomorrow as long as my clock isn't blinking later when i check up on it.

Like your idea of putting a clock on the circuit, so simple but I'd never have thought of that! +rep for creativity!
Sounds like you'll have quite a grow going there, I'd love to see pics, I'm just starting out and looking for inspiration, I've a couple of cheese ladies 3wks into flower under 600 hps and looking amazing! Thinking about some form of hydroponics, but don't really understand the different varieties.

hey man,
just to clarify, are you using a surge protector extension cord, like the ones you can buy for household use, or a timer contactor, the kind you buy from a hydro store [looks like an extension cord attached to a transformer]?

If you're not using a timer contactor for any light at 400w and above, when your standard timer 'contacts', that is, switches on, you can encounter problems due to the high load. Timer contactors function by allowing your timer to control the light, but sending the load through the contactor unit instead of the standard timer. This stops the load from destroying the internal parts of the timer.

I couldnt tell from your post whether you knew all this already, or if 'surge protector' is just what timer contactors are called in the americas, but over here in england we get all kinds of 'surge protectors' which will not prevent this problem. A surge protector is designed to protect against power spikes, like lightening strikes, they dont protect my timer from a constantly high wattage.

Had the same problem with my light for ages, thought it was just a glitch as it would only happen now and again, and then seem fixed. Mentioned it to my friend, who turned me on to the contactor, not too expensive £20, highly recommended by all grow shops.

sorry for the extra long post maybe you got it sorted just wanted to make sure, good luck

Contactors and surge protectors are the same thing :bigjoint:

Is the wall plug grounded?

It might be a grounding error from the ballast to the light.

Ballasts have an auto shut off in case it overheats, or has a ground fault.

Could be the ballast is overheating?

Auto shutoff will kick back on after about 15 secs depending on what the delay is. This will cause a "hot start" which is bad for your bulb life.

Good to read ya got this fixed and props on the clock idea that was pretty clever haha....I do have a little input if you know how you may have wanted to replace the regular wall plug with a GFI....peace
