I was at home depot and saw some Hps lights and was wondering if anyone has used them for growing? they were cheaper than ones for growing. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Essentially they are the same thing. The difference is....when purchasing grow lights you are typically getting a "remote ballast" which means all of the electrical equipment is in a separate box and the lamp is connected by wire. When you buy one from Home Depot it is going to be all one solid piece like for when you want to mount a spotlight on the side of your house. They work just the same.

One more thing, typically when you pick up an hps setup for growing you will also grab a bulb more suited to growing...like one with an extra blue spectrum or something. But again, the stock Home Depot ones will work fine.

dont do it,
I had the 70W HPS security light. it cost me $50 and a bunch of headaches. first off the HPS is controlled by an automatic sensor that turns the lights on and off, so U have to find a way to bypass that and hook it up to a timer.

plus unless U can find a way to make the ballast remote, or find a different reflector U wont get great distribution. the ballast went after a week on mine, but that was just my personal experience.

IMHO if U want the best bang for a little buck then U should invest in a 250W HID. Either that or get CFL's without the ballast and all that bullshit.

I just bought a 400watt HPS light for $119 plus shipping and it works great! It comes with the ballast, reflector & your choice of 3 types of grow bulbs. It's a great buy and much less headache than using the HD light!! If you want a smaller light they have a 150watt set-up for $70 plus shipping which is the same kind as the one I bought. here's the link if you want to check them out:

400watt: High Tech Garden Supply

I"ve used hps bulbs from home depot.....
Hey Sunny i was wondering if the nugs that youve grown purely with the 250 hps bulb that wasnt from home depot were any lighter or denser than with the bulb that you did get from home depot (without the added blue). Did you do some type of expiriment to see which was better?

I bought 2 50w HPS security lights from the depot (they were on sale less than 10 bucks each)and took them apart, fitted them into reflectors and all is great. They come with a photocell (turns them on when it gets dark out) but any retard knows you can just put tape over the senor or just cut the two wires feeding it to eliminate it. The pic in my avatar is the finished product. Do it, you wont be sorry, its cheap and easy. Plus when you can afford to go 400w or higher, these 50watters are great to supplement the sides of your plants with light.

The one I bought does not turn on at night. Maybe the way I have it set up? I don't even see a sensor though.

I bought the 70w white finish and a grounded extension corded already cut and set up for wiring. Wired them together and plugged them into my timer. My closet is pitch black right now as it should be... I did not notice a sensor. But could it be because there is essentially no power going to the unit?

Not all lights have a sensor, in fact most don't. Its the cheap security lights that tend to have them, wall mount type, not the overhead type you have(if its the one im thinking of)

I've used the home depot 70w HPS security lights before they work but they don't sell anything of higher wattage. I think its better to save up and invest in a real grow light something above 400 watts.

how hard is it to save $70 to get a half way decent light...High Tech Garden Supply

the 400 from them for $120 works great!!

though I do like the idea of getting a couple of the 50's for side light. if I find a couple of HPS security lights on sale at HD I'll pick them up and try wiring them up myself...

The highest wattage HPS at my local Depot is 70watts. And as far as finding HPS on sale there, now may be a good time to look. When i bought mine they were on the same isle as the security lighting but on the opposite end (not near any other lighting fixtures, so look around, seems they dont want clearance items mixed in with reg retail stuff so you may have to search around a bit. And try not to ask an employee, they arent stupid,(i take that back) but they know why your after that light. Its commonly sought after by pot growers.

With all that said, i finally got a phat check and ordered a 600watt cooltube (both hps and mh) from HTG. So my 2 50watters are going to be EXTRA light for the sides in a few days I hope.

the depot here sells them for $50, which i think is better than $50 worth of cfl's. But, of course, a real grow light is optimal. Just do what i did, use the depot light to get yourself up and running but plan on going bigger as soon as you got the $.

Thats good shit there lol! I was at Lowes once loading up for a new grow and the there was a guy around my age (27) at the register and he didnt say anything but it was quite obvious what I was up to. The guy had dreads (equals obvious stoner) so thats why i picked that line to check out in.
