the H.D. 6" is rated at like 240 cfm... the 8" is rated at like 510. i have a 8" on a DIY carbon filter. After a bit of carbon the actual cfm is prolly more like 100 cfm, but it works for the very small distance (1 ft.) and little amount of media that i am going though. So for like 30 dollars for the inline fan and 25 dollars for the temp control box earlier described (H.D. inline fan thermostat) it works well enough. They may stop selling the thermostats though... i got mine on sale... and i'm guessing its cuz they're gonna stop carrying it.

The 250 CFM rating on those 6 inch fans is for MOVING AIR. They are booster fans. If they are the only fan being used the CFM drops drastically, and if you add any ducting it drops even more. They have very little pulling or pushing power on their own.

Actually they have always had these. They are just booster fans. Normally people use them to boost their furnace ducting, a few of these in the right spots and you can take care of all those cold spots in your house.

Also these fans are rated for boosting air that is already moving. If you hook up some ducting and want to use only these fans you are going to have horrible results.

I tried one of the 6" 250CFMs for a single 6" reflector with NO ducting, after it got way too damn hot I had to buy some vortex fans.

I only use these things to boost my Vortex fans if Im running a lot of ducting with a lot of bends.

What setup were you running tho? Some people may have smaller areas with smaller lights and not have a heating issue like you did.

Great thread on those fans tho, i've been wondering the same myself. Looks like i'll be getting a vortex afterall :sad:

I use two 8 inchers on my dr120 puchsing air in... and 3 4" muffin fans for exhaust... No problems... te 3 4" muffin work better though as i have tones of suction on the tent.

I wont be buying $150 vortex fan thats for sure....LOL


here you can see the 3 muffin fans... one before the hood ...one after the hood... and one above the hood... Not hot at all!!!... Its pretty cool too it kinda makes a wind tunnel... When i first installed them there was crap in the hood and i could see it spiraling out....sweet

you can see the 8 incher hooked up on the bottom... theres another on the other side...

Vortex fans are the only thing making it possible to grow come summer time. I got 6' for 80$ a 4' for $50.. Keeps my 3x3 in the 72-77 temp range with dual 600's. Cool tubed obviously.

Ah i see... IM going to duct AC air into the cab... exhausting i have no problems... where do you get 6" vortex for 80$ though?... hopefully soon ill convert the dr120 into vegging tent and then get the double and either 1 600 on a mover...or 2 600 like your using... I haven't seen many people use the movers...

Has anyone tried reducing the gap between the fan blade and housing on those inline duct fans? I think doing this would increase their free air cfm rating. I use 4" muffin fans in conjunction with my duct fan for my exhaust. It goes 4" muffin fan (18 volts) mounted by my light -> duct to outside of room -> 4" duct fan -> 4" muffin fan (@ 18V also). Really good air flow this way, but I think I could get more if I modify my duct fan.

I JUST KIND OF SKIPPED THROUGH THIS BUT HAS ANYONE MENTIONED ONE MELTING.. I HAD A COOL TUBE THAT I WAS VENTING WITH ONE OF THE HD FANS 6" AND THE FUCKIN THING MELTED ON ME.. I GUESS MY DUCTING WAS TOO LONG..
ANOTHER KICK ASS THING IS HD NOW HAS GREAT TDS/PPM METERS .. THEY HAVE A NEW PURIFIER ON THE MARKET THAT LOWERS THE PPM TO 0 AND YOU GET A FREE METER TO PROVE IT.. THE FILTERS ARE SMALL AND PORTABLE LIKE BRITTA'S.. THEY ARE MADE FOR A WATER DISPINSER BUT CAN BE MODIFYED FOR US GROWERS.. I AM STILL YET TO DO THIS, BUT WOULD LIKE TO.. ANY SUGESTIONS??? www.zerowater.com

and the replacement meters are 30.00 .. and it works just as good as my 90.00 sunleaves meter...

i got the ZeroWater filtration unit you're talking about... then returned it and accidently forgot to give back the free ppm meter...

butta... with the cost of replacement filters for the ZeroWater filtration system (you can only run like 200 gallons through a set of new filters... then its like another 60 bucks) i had it worked out that i'd spend a ton less money by just getting a 100 gallon per day Reverse Osmosis filtration system online (the ones in H.D. and Lowe's are not suited for this high of output, so make sure you check how many gallons a day it can filter through, they vary a lot).

If you do like the ZeroWater filtration system, save yourself some money, you spend a premium to get their water pitcher' ... just buy the 4 pack box of filter replacements and stack a couple 5 gallon buckets on top of eachother, using 1 of the filters between the two buckets to drip the pure water to the lower bucket.

By the time you spend like 60-90 dollars for the pitcher and 60 buck more for the 4-pack replacement filters... you've almost paid enough to get a serious RO system online for like 175 dollars that will last you a year easily. Where-as the pitcher and replacement filters would only last me like a month.
