Hopefully an Emergency Evaded

Hey everyone!

I'm a brand new grower and this is my very first post. I started a seed of Afghan Kush Ryder about 11 days ago for growth in my closet. I germinated her in a shot glass, then moved her to soil using some "Expert Gardener Potting Soil" as a medium (I really don't want to mess with Hydroponics and all that stuff). I was using two lamps with two 40w full spectrum fluorescent lights, and I thought that would be enough. Some water with a couple drops of lemon juice to bring the PH to a good spot (roughly 6.8, as I've seen is recommended for soil mediums in most threads), and I've been watering once every 2 to 3 days.
Well, around day 7 or 8 I noticed that she was starting to stand pretty tall, which I observed online was probably because she wasn't getting enough light. I watched a grow video and saw some of them standing tall, so I wasn't too concerned about it. However, I got back home from thanksgiving break and things got worse. She was standing at 5 1/2 inches (third set of leaves just sprouted), and MAN she was tilting really hard. I packed some soil at her base to get her standing tall and upright again and switched to a couple of flourescent bulbs that have an output of 840 lumens and are the equivalent of 75w apiece (but it only uses 19!). She already seems like she's doing better, standing at a little less than 5 inches since I redid the soil, will probably water her tonight (she hasn't been watered since Wednesday evening). What do you guys think? Good fix? Is she gonna be alright?

Welcome to Rollitup!

It's a weed, it'll probably do fine with time. You should stop packing soil around the base for support and either tie it down, or slit a 1-2" piece of plastic straw lengthwise, open it up and encircle the base of the plant.Burn the straw to support the plant.

What are you doing for airflow/heat control?

Thanks for the welcome!

I have a fan running in the room that's not pictured. I've kept the door open to let some air flow through.

Well let me first off say, welcome to RIU... This site will tell you a lot of very good things, and a lot of very bad things, so use your judgement and get more then one opinion. I would HIGHLY advise you to check this thread out, https://www.rollitup.org/newbie-central/429767-replant-those-long-stretchy-stems.html , you should learn a thing or two that will help your girl get in better condition from where you stand at the moment. Your plant will be fine just do a lot of research and dont over love!

I meant bury the straw, not burn it. Yikes!

I thought that's what you meant! I've got one here, I'm gonna get that done today. :) Thank you guys for all your help, I'll update as time goes. I'm upgrading to three Halogen lights that produce over 1000 lumens apiece. Will that help growth? Should I worry about heat? Thanks for answer all my questions!

why do you keep going on about lumens?

Yes halogen = bad... good job finding that out on your own.

You can replant the stem, then keep your flourescent's a few inches away from the plant.. will keep the stretch down.. you don't want it tall when you are growing indoors. Lights can only penetrate so deeply into a canopy... and flouescents are very deep.
