lumen wise it is 8 in. but i have one stubbornly tall plant that is about 5 in from my 600 and she is fine, it is more of a heat issue, use ur hand to tell how hot it is where ur plants are, good luck brotha

the tops will wilt a little if its too close, like pacman said - use your hand to tell how hot it is. my 1000watt is about 1 foot 3 inches away from my giant 5 footers, but im gonna need to raise it again soon. if you can get a reflector w/ a glass bottom cover/slide then you can let them get really close, especially if you have an air cooling system attached to the light itself.

the plants in the pic are 3 weeks into flowering and starting to bud... do you think they will stop getting any taller at this point?

I have seen 1000 watt BULBS 4 inches from PLANTS.... the closer the better (general rule of thumb)...

Of course, IT will require the LIGHT to be exhausted, a fan and all around great ventilation... YOU DO NOT WANT TO BURN YOUR PLANTS!!!

Here is a light mover holding a 1000 watt metal halide bulb as it moves over 400 clones.... the light is only about 4 inches from the plants..

And the second picture is 2 - 1000 watt HPS bulbs on a light mover JUST barely (2-6 inches) over some flowering plants

There is the "hand rule"

PUT your hand at the same level as the highest FOLIAGE (closest to the light). If your hand can withstand the heat, so can the plants.
