How does one test ph and ppm in a coco wick system?

Ahoy there!

I've got a couple strains cloned right now, and I hope to be ordering two or three more. I'm hoping on keeping some small bonsai moms, and I figured small pots with coco and a wick feeding system would work best.

I'm wondering how I test ph and ppm of the coco medium? I guess in terms of ppm I could always just keep it somewhat on the low side, since I'm looking for slow growth anyways.
For ph I use a liquid test kit, I do not have a digital meter.

Just pour a small amount of water through the medium and collect the water. Test the waters pH. Make sure the water is free of particles of the media.
